John Oliver calls for an end to DST

To follow up on the discussion on this blog two days ago on the need to end the practice of clock shifting twice a year and stick with one time setting, John Oliver on his show Last Week Tonight uses his regular segment How is this still a thing? to look at the history of this practice and argue that it is high time we got rid of it.

DST is great for me. I can starting riding my bike after work. Do some chores in the yard, etc.

DST is terrible for me. My kids now have a couple more weeks of waiting for the school bus standing on a busy road with no sidewalk in the pitch dark. It’s terrible for me, personally, because I now have to fight morning rush hour in the pitch dark as well. I also have to try to navigate a poorly-lit parking lot and walk nearly a quarter mile through a questionable neighborhood in the dark to get to work on time.

A friend of mine raises cattle for beef. I asked her if DST was better for the cows. She looked at me like I was nuts. “Cows don’t wear watches”. This time of year when the grass is still under snow, the cows are fed forage (hay). They don’t care what the sun’s doing; as long as they have hay and water, they’re fine.

Lemme guess… they go to sleep when darkness falls and wake up at dawn.

(Or: if people were like cows, there’d be daylight savings pretty much every day)

You need to be up and about before dawn, then?

(That may be the effect, but is sure is not the intent)

Not a fan. I’m very glad to be moving back to Az soon.

I commute by bicycle, and right about the time it’s starting to get light in the mornings, DST kicks in and I’m biking in the dark for another 45 days or so.
