My internet has been down most of the day, so I’ve taken advantage of the silence to do a bunch of class prep. Nothing exciting, no problems, I’ve just been temporarily inaccessible.

It’s preferable to have your home and cellular internet provided by separate carriers in cases such as this. If one goes down another picks up the slack in the interim.
I’ve had some power outages from storms or other reasons lately. Power outage during heat advisories are scary. Aside from that good cellular service might pick up where power impact home internet drops the ball. But that’s only viable as long as the mobile device batteries hold out.
Still it might be good to not be connected for a while, except for those horrific internet withdrawal symptoms (twitch, eye roll, drool, scream!).
That said…gettingba cheaper deal by going with a single provider for home and cellular is very tempting!

Get a battery backup for your home, that way you can recharge your mobile device whether or not the power is also out. They’re more affordable than they have been.
The problem was a blown battery in the fiber optic modem. The fix was just ripping it out and discarding it — it turns out the battery is a frequent source of failures, and it runs just fine without it. As long as the repair guy was here, he also upgraded the circuit board.
Battery backup for the house wouldn’t help.
I was fine coping without the internet for half a day. I’m going to be offline for much of tomorrow, too, because today was move-in day, the students are back, and I’ve got multiple meetings all day long.
About ten years ago, my family and I visited the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican and were enjoying the gorgeous ceiling along with dozens of other tourists who were chatting away with each other when suddenly a huge amplified voice blasted through the chapel with one word: “SILENZIO!” There was silence for one beat and then the noise jumped back up to its former level as everyone just ignored the order. I get that the church wanted everyone to gaze at the beautiful chapel in reverent silence, but shouting at us like that made them seem like a touchy bully. Maybe they thought we were all Catholic cultists programmed to obey.
