Actually, septum ornaments aren’t that rare these days. It was relatively popular among punks back in the day, and they continue to be a fashion statement item.
Impractical for northern Scandinavia in winter. They would get in the way of blowing the nose.
They would also get very cold very fast. Look at all that surface area for radiating heat!
