Life sometimes gets in the way

I was sorta disconnected yesterday. My router was down for most of the morning, but mainly, my wife had one of her infrequent days off from work. She has an erratic schedule, and seems to work approximately 6 days out of 7, and her days off are unpredictable. Working in elder care is one of those difficult and under-appreciated jobs that should be paid better but never will be.

So we took advantage of the time to get a lot of mundane things done.

  • We reorganized my home office, clearing out a lot of the clutter, moving the futon I never used to a different room. Now I actually have room to move!
  • Our clothes dryer wasn’t working. It turns out the vent was clogged, and we pulled it out of its niche to clear it, which was a revelation. This appliance was here when we moved in almost 25 years ago, and we’d never looked under or behind it until now. We finally discovered what happened to Mary’s favorite gardening hat. To put it in perspective, we found old Howard Dean signs that had fallen behind it.
  • We went shopping for a new bed. Mary has some minor respiratory issues, which means she often has to sit up in bed, so we’re looking for one of those fancy adjustable beds that will let us both be comfortable. I think it might be a Christmas gift to each other. I think we’re also sinking into degenerate decadence here in the waning years of the American empire.
  • It’s not supposed to be bent like that

  • I’m also looking for a bookshelf with doors — the evil cat destroyed a camera lens (an inexpensive one, fortunately) by flicking it off a shelf, so I need a cat-proof way to store electronics and camera gear. I’ve ordered one that will arrive next week. Until then, I’m hovering over my lens collection like a dragon over its hoard, and snarling if the cat approaches.
  • Of course I went into the lab to tend the spiders.
  • Mary restocked her bird feeders. My job was to hold the ladder.

My parents got a bed like that one, saved their marriage (or at least it made them happier).

They lent it to my BIL when he had a bad fall and broke his ribs. Saved his sanity.

    PZ. Bed-shopping advice:
We had a sleep number mattress on top of our base for many years.
We also ran into a problem when my husband needed to have his head raised for his CPAP to work well, and having the head of the bed that high was miserable on my neck.
We went off to the sleep number store and asked for a split-top queen. The young salesman showed us the split-top king and told us that they no longer make a split-top queen. That was totally unacceptable, since our expensive platform base is queen-sized and our room is too small for a king size, The salesman spoke over my head to my husband ant told him to come see him “when she decides to re-decorate”. I was furious. If the guy thought that I was going to get rid of a $6K solid wood bedroom set on a whim, he should see my 1940s era dining room set! That wood furniture is going nowhere.
We went to Saatva, a more expensive, but better quality mattress-maker. (not an American company, of course)
They sold us a beautiful split-top queen mattress that fits our platform perfectly, is adjustable on both sides, and even does heat and massage! We love it!
If you can, I highly recommend Saatva mattresses. They only have showrooms in NYC and San Francisco, but they have an online presence.
    Good luck!

Not sure if you’re 100% on the bed, but if you want a cheaper option you can get foam wedges. That’s what I use for GERD, and the family uses when they’re stuff up. I’ve been using them since I was a teen.

You owe me $150 for a new pancake lens!

Was it a pancake lens already, or just after the cat was done with it? 😉

We bought a SleepNumber bed, and augmented it with a memory foam topper. I always miss it when we’re traveling.

I wish we had gone for the motorized version, because we each use a stack of pillows.

Being able to adjust everything is nice.

My mum got one when she hit her 70s, and she thought it was rather nice and helpful.
2nd hand, but it lasted her long enough.

(Not really a repeating expense, is it?)

Spiders I can find. Sadly, Wisconsin doesn’t have too many scorpions.

(And my husband would be very happy to see some spiders vacate our property; he’s an arachnophobe. I have to save them from him.)
