I didn’t bring a plastic baggie with me to scoop it up

I’m just going to leave this little message from Pat Condell right here.

Nothing funny about rape, but if a Swedish news editor was ever gang raped by Muslim immigrants it would be hard not to laugh.

Comments

  1. Rowan vet-tech says

So there’s nothing funny about rape, except for the fact that it’s hilarious, apparently. Is this in the same category as “I’m not racist/sexist/etc but…”?

  2. blf says

The eejit has daesh envy. They behead and incinerate and enslave — and rape — people “legally” (that is, according to their own “justice” system), whilst he would be in a shitefeckton load of trouble if he were to do such things.

  3. zenlike says

Also, this is in response to an actual incident of gang rape. What a shitbag.

    His previous tweet:

Cowardly Swedish “journalists” are traitors to their country, to their people, and to the civilised world.

Come on Condell, call them quislings, we know you want to. Also, if you are parroting the exact same words as spoken by neo-fascists, don’t whine when people think you are one.

Also, a lot of retweets from Nigel “totes not a racist you guys!” Farage of the totally not racist UKIP.

    Was Condell always a hard-rightwinger I wonder?

  4. Saad says

blf, I think you’re right. His Twitter looks like an ISIS propaganda page. He just doesn’t have the backing of the law to be able to do more than just spew anti-Muslim hate.

  5. says

It seems as if people often start off with a set of beliefs, and when they get reinforcement from an audience, they expound upon them and get more reinforcement, expound more, lather-rinse-repeat until they’ve fully revealed their inner beliefs however horrible those may be. I guess it’s narcissism in a feedback loop, or something. Eventually you wind up Dawkinsing or Condelling or Masonning or — if you have a really big audience and lots of feedback you become like Glenn Beck.

  6. microraptor says

And that’s the reason I stopped listening to anything he had to say years ago.

  7. savant says

Ugh. I can’t believe I used to listen to this guy’s commentary. Unsubscribed years ago, but even still, the fact that I once considered him witty stings every time I see his name mentioned. I guess I can be glad for one thing, at least. I can be proud of the fact that I *didn’t* go down that road.

  8. grumpyoldfart says

I used to eagerly await each of his videos – and then he went from humor to hate.

  9. smhll says

Barf! People who don’t fear the people I obsessively fear deserve a ‘good’ comeuppance? Double barf.

  10. Donnie says

Don’t forget, Richard Dawkins is glad that he is on “our side” with his merciless humour.

“Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion, said of Condell that “Pat Condell is unique. Nobody can match his extraordinary blend of suavity and savagery. With his articulate intelligence he runs rings around the religious wingnuts that are the targets of his merciless humour. Thank goodness he is on our side”.[49] In 2008, Dawkins’s website released a collection of Condell’s monologues on DVD, titled Pat Condell: Anthology.[49]”

  11. khms says

I had a look at that article.

I have, of course, no knowledge of the truth behind anything claimed there, but I notice a few things (and I didn’t manage to read all of it):

    * Those clearly non-Swedish men … of those the details were listed, one apparently had Swedish papers, and it looked to me as most of the others were born in Sweden.
    * A conspiracy of all Swedish media to lie about things like this? Not completely impossible, but some other interpretation seems much more likely.
    * I notice that there’s an interview with a Swedish minister completely fabricated from speculation. Not a good sign.
    * And the comments seem to have a high percentage of what sounds like textbook MRAs.

At that point, it seems to me that I know enough.

  12. says

I’m sure that the woman whose traumatic experience they’re exploiting is really happy to see the horrible crime commited against her being equated with somebody writing something maybe slightly off in a newspaper.
Dontcha know it’s just the same

  13. Rachel: astronomy nerd and estrogen addict says

Yeah, I’m glad that I’ve never really ever been a follower of this piece of shit.

@marilove #14, that sums it up pretty well.

  14. saganite says

Oh, right, he still exists and spreads his bull. I watched some of his videos years ago, but haven’t really looked back since I stopped.

  15. reaven says

Being from Finland myself, I can say that the link of the first tweet is typical hate speech and generalization towards immigrants also existing here.

There was actually a group raping in Finland last week and the discussion around it was very similar. The nationality of the perpetrators was omitted in an update of an article but the comments made it clear that “it was because of the political hushing campaign and people should know that they were Somalis”.
While I understand that statistically immigrants could be performing many of these illegalities, the amount of generalization is just absurd. Every time the immigrant background is mentioned, certain people use that to promote their hatred towards foreign people (especially those from Muslim countries-although it’s rarely mentioned). Any form of criticism is met with denial.

  16. BaldySlaphead says

#13 Donnie – that comment from Dawkins is from 2008. Don’t forget that PZ was promoting Condell videos (not uncritically, but overall positively) well into at least 2009 (from a quick search of the ScienceBlogs Pharyngula), so I don’t think it’s particularly damning that Dawkins said something positive about him so long ago.

Condell’s views have become more and more vile as the years pass. There was a time when he was mostly talking sense.

  17. BaldySlaphead says

#23 Gilliell – I’m not sure that’s an entirely reasonable assumption. More damning would be if Dawkins has continued to endorse him. Unfortunately – certainly as recently as July 2013 – he has done so, and Condell’s video is on his website, so he’s condemned by his own hand.

  18. anteprepro says

Just when you thought Pat Condell couldn’t get more odious.

It’s a great illustration of Bigot Intersectionality though: Condell was one of the leading examples of atheist Islamophobia, being arguably worse than even Hitchens and Harris (though with hardly the status of either). And yet, at least in this instance, he has managed to drift over into the misogynist atheist camp as well. It’s almost as if there isn’t much distance between them!

  19. says

    savant (#10) –

Ugh. I can’t believe I used to listen to this guy’s commentary. Unsubscribed years ago, but even still, the fact that I once considered him witty stings every time I see his name mentioned.

Condell is an example of fame and ego going to someone’s head. He got (semi-) famous for the things he said, then assumed he could say anything and it would be accepted. I’ve seen that in several online writers and video bloggers who think they’re no longer accountable for the things they say. I won’t name names, but it runs the gamut of the political and social spectrum.

If there is one upside it’s the fact that now we know what sort of ugliness he harbours and can avoid him, not continue to listen and be shocked and surprised far later. It’s unlikely he became a racist and a xenophobe, more likely he always was and now he’s unafraid to say it.

  20. anteprepro says

Anyone happen to have a vague idea when Condell went Full Xenophobe? I seem to remember liking his videos circa 2008. Though I have spent far more time knowing him as a bigot who is among the worst of the anti-Muslim atheist brigade, so I don’t recall when exactly I stopped taking him seriously.

  21. ellisdee25 says

I like Pat Condell. I think it is important to have people that speak out against the general placating attitudes that exist – it is easy to join the social justice bandwagons, but difficult to dissent without being shouted down. Great evil can be done in the name of religion, and great evil is being done in the name of religion, and the comments on this thread turn a blind eye to that. Pat brings issues up, throws them in your face, and does so with vitriolic humour. Yes, there is ironic humour in the juxtaposition of those stating that rape in the name of Islam is not occurring being raped by those that follow Islam. One way we deal with horrible events is to laugh about them. You have the right to be offended, but also have the right to not be offended – remember that.

  22. Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls says

elisdee25, please give me a realistic scenario where you will have to live under Sharia law in your lifetime, without moving to a country with it already in place.

  23. zenlike says

    ellisdee25,

of course he has the ‘right’ to spout his nonsense, just as we have the right to say he is a bigoted piece of shit, just like his fan-boys like you. Remember that.

  24. anteprepro says

Heh. Social justice bandwagons. As if islamaphobia is independent minded iconoclasm. Dissent shouted down. As if the islamophobes arent shouting people down. We turn a blind eye to the evil of religion…..because we point the evils of our fellow atheists. Apparently the evil of bandwagons and the virtue of dissent suddenly doesnt apply.

And, of course, defending the rape joke. Class act.

    Fuck off ellisdee25

  25. Nick Gotts says

    ellisdee25,
Quite apart from being a racist, rape-apologist scumbag, Condell chooses to associate with the homophobic, misogynist, science denialist lackwits of UKIP. No doubt you’re just fine with that too.

  26. Al Dente says

Since ellisdee25 hasn’t posted in about six hours possibly xe is familiar with the first rule of holes.

  27. ellisdee25 says

Thanks, people. That was pretty toxic. Is this whole site loaded with haters and tolls? I came here because The Atheist Experience said they have a blog on this site. I posted here because I enjoy Pat Condell’s comedy, and there didn’t seem to be anyone else that offered any support.
A lot of you are hating on Richard Dawkins as well? And Hitchens? Did you hate George Carlin too?
Nerd of the Redhead – I don’t expect Sharia law in Canada anytime soon, but I have daughters, and they may have daughters. Religion is insidious
Chigau, you are correct, I am just leaving. I won’t come back, so Daz can stop with the popcorn, anteprepro can appreciate that I have ‘fucked off’. That was wicked polite.
zenline – try to post more like your handle, I am not sure Siddartha would ad homenim as ‘bigoted piece of shit’,
Al Dente – I am covering this hate-filled hole, planting seed, and forgetting. So many better things in life than here

  28. Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls says

    Ellisdee25

I don’t expect Sharia law in Canada anytime soon, but I have daughters, and they may have daughters. Religion is insidious

In other words, you have nothing but islamophic paranoia, and your xenophobia. Typical of none thinking bigots. If you could think without fear, you would dismiss the possibility of Sharia law over all of Canada as paranoia. I’m not worried at all about Islam. The local Xians on the otherhand…..

O good, another idiot not understanding “ad hominem”. Idiot AND bigot. Congratulations.

  30. David Marjanović says

Great evil can be done in the name of religion, and great evil is being done in the name of religion, and the comments on this thread turn a blind eye to that.

    O RLY?

Not many people like to repeat the obvious in every thread…

A lot of you are hating on Richard Dawkins as well?

It was here on this very blog where he made his infamous Dear Muslima comment. I couldn’t believe it was really him till PZ confirmed it.

    And Hitchens?

Ignorance produces fear, and fear turns people into warmongers like Hitchens.

  31. anteprepro says

    ellisdee sez:

Thanks, people. That was pretty toxic.

“That was pretty toxic”. Says the person defending the rape joke.

    Okay.

Is this whole site loaded with haters and tolls?

Haters and Trolls. From the person defending Pat Condell bigoted brand of anti-Muslim “humor”.

    Okay.

I don’t expect Sharia law in Canada anytime soon, but I have daughters, and they may have daughters. Religion is insidious

Invoking the harm religion does to women. While defending an atheist talking about how funny it would be if people got raped.

    Okay.

I won’t come back, so Daz can stop with the popcorn, anteprepro can appreciate that I have ‘fucked off’. That was wicked polite.

    “Fuck off”: Impolite.
“It would be funny if those people got raped”: Comedy.

    Okay.

zenline – try to post more like your handle, I am not sure Siddartha would ad homenim as ‘bigoted piece of shit’,

And the final fail is not knowing what an ad hominem is.

Also noted: All tone trolling, all the time. Nothing of substance was actually addressed.

Yeah, for your sake I really hope you continue to just bravely run away. Your posts are a waste of everyone’s time.
