I was a Baptist for 50 years, 25 years as a pastor. There were Baptists who insisted that our lineage could be traced all the way back to John the Baptist. Jesus was a Baptist because he was baptized by the original Baptist. Crazy stuff. I knew we went back a few hundred years. Getting back to John the Baptist required a good bit of historical gymnastics.
