Vampyroteuthis infernalis, better known as the vampire squid, lives in the midwaters of Monterey Bay. It spends most of its time in the oxygen minimum layer, 600 to 900 meters below the surface, where low dissolved oxygen makes life difficult for most other animals. Vampiroteuthis is a living fossil, having changed little from cephalopods found in fossils that are hundreds of millions of years old. This is the first time this animal has been on display to the public.
