In about an hour, I get to teach my last lecture of Fall 2021

Yes! Almost done! I get to dismiss the class, and then move on to … composing the final exam, and then grading the exams next week. And then getting ready for Genetics in the spring.

I won’t be saying goodbye to the students, though. They’re mostly 2nd year students, and this is a small university, so we’ll all be seeing each other again (cue groans from the class who are struggling with the material right now.)

Your next assignment is to rest until blood pressure and other signs return to normal. Or at least do not indicate imminent need for cardiovascular interventions.

Congratulations. My last formal meetings were yesterday. Now the stat classes and the data science classes are turning in (electronically) end of semester projects. Just as you will see some again, so will I: some stat students will be in an applied probability course, some data students will be in modeling course, next semester. It’s always good to see familiar faces.

    Best of luck grading.

Michael Nesmit , a member of the Monkees has passed away.
Myself I was too young to buy the records, but my siblings were playing the stuff so I have my own relation to the music.
He was two weeks short of 79, so he had a full life but it still sucks.

birgerjohansson@2 He also wrote A Different Drum which became a hit for Linda Ronstadt and The Stone Poneys. Also, his mother invented Liquid Paper.

I had a friend who was very into the Monkees. I still consider them a fake band, though I’m pretty sure all of them were already musicians when hired. There are so many great bands of that era, it just seems like a strange fixation. Maybe I need to watch the shows again for the montages and humor (even these are derivative of the Beatle’s movie A Hard Day’s Night).

But to give Nesmith his due, he was a talented and prolific guy with a long career that went beyond one TV band. There’s nothing I dislike about him.

Nesmith had some interesting asides. His mom invented Liquid Paper and he sorta set the stage for what would transform into MTV.

I recall seeing this so many years ago and wondering WTF is it: https://youtu.be/Mi0b8tcCQSE

“Lucy and Ramona and Sunset Sam
People on the streets tryin’ to find a plan
People on the streets lookin’ for the land
Lucy and Ramona and their brother Sunset Sam”

I still haven’t figured that out? Would sniffing correction fluid help?

Sunset Sam seemed a hybrid of Hulk Hogan and Jesse Ventura.
