In the discussion about the Minnesota GOP platform, this comment from Molly made me think about what it would be like if Republicans were consistent in their attitudes towards sex and guns.
If Republicans taught gun safety like they do sex education, they would:
- allow everyone to own a gun (even more, they’d require it: gunlessness is an abomination), but they’d insist that kids could never, ever take them out of their holster, sheath or gun rack
- it would be illegal to expose your weapon or even talk about it
- exposing a gun on TV would outrage viewers, who would deluge the network with complaining phone calls
- blanks, trigger locks, and even safeties would be forbidden
- there would be accidental discharges every night in every teenager’s home, but no one would ever talk about it
- it would be a shameful sin to go off by yourself and practice shooting at targets
- the only acceptable use would be to kill something, although it would be OK to miss if you were sincerely trying to kill something
- most hunters would be desperately hoping to miss every time they went hunting, and would try to contrive situations in which they could fire their guns without actually hitting anything
It seems like a useful analogy to me. If it’s common sense gun ownership to know how to clean and maintain the thing, to practice sensible gun safety rules, and to treat it as a responsibility that demands knowledge and care and good understanding of its operation, why not expect the same of people who own a penis or vagina? There’s nothing about knowing how something works that is antithetical to the idea that one should refrain from using it for its intended purpose, whether that is killing something or getting it pregnant, and in fact, we know that understanding in detail how something works is the best way to prevent it from going off inadvertently.
As it is, they’re in a situation where they are tacitly favoring accidental, unplanned accidents over the possibility that kids will intentionally practice safe operation of their equipment.
It would be equally interesting to think what would happen if the situation were reversed, that is if conservatives treated sex the way they treat guns.

It’s implicit, here, but it should be explicit: no one would ever be taught how to handle a gun safely. Dad would say “son, don’t shoot that gun except to kill something”, but he wouldn’t explain how to load it, unload it, safe it, carry it, aim it.
Extensive target-shooting is essential before actual hunting. Otherwise, you might miss (when you should have .mrs)
ricardog, the state would license you to name only one person as a shootee at a time, and would only approve of you selecting the shootee from the unlicensed half of the population. Getting the actual permission to shoot them would be hedged around with a year’s worth of paperwork, you would have to explain the reason you wanted to shoot them to a judge in front of your lawyer and theirs, and you would have to pay their hospital bills for up to twenty years, but after you shot them, you could get another license to shoot someone else, and could thus have as many consecutive licenses as you wanted. Shooting other people without the benefit of a license would be winked at so long as you were an experienced master hunter and could prove you could pay the hospital bills in case you actually hit them.
How’s that?
But the question that burns me is this: If Republicans really had to choose between giving up their guns or giving up in issues concerning sex… which one would it be? :)

Someone once said that the right believe in hunter education programs because they will lead to more responsible behavior at the same time they object to sex education because it will lead to more irresponsible behavior.

Ah, but I can see the right stating that not knowing the proper care and usage of a firearm can cause death.
Of course, they would leave out the fact that random unprotected sex without the knowledge of preventing STD’s could cause the same, or that the unwanted pregnancy doesn’t necessarily kill them mother and child, but it may very well makes their lives miserable (sort of like a two for one sale on misery and poverty).
But that would be inconvenient to keeping their evangelical base happy.
I always wonder why having sex with someone is different than say talking to someone. I don’t see why sex is tied with relationships and marriages. I don’t see how sex and love are connected in any way. If two consenting adults want to have sex then they should go at it with no strings attached anytime of the day anywhere (with some privacy, say, in “sex rooms”). In my ideal world there would be sex rooms as much as there are rest rooms.
Hmm, I think this analogy is a little strained. For one thing, genitalia, unlike guns, are part of your body; you can’t not own them, barring some pretty serious injuries. And you don’t need a permit to conceal them.
Although contemplating the equivalent of a ban on “assault weapons” is good for a laugh, at least.
I suppose someone could do a list of “if Democrats thought about sex education the way they think about gun control”, which would also be funny, but ulimately just point out the failures of the analogy.
I’m a little disappointed to see teleological talk like “intended purpose” applied to body parts, at least without some kind of qualifications. Even more disappointed to see the tacit assumption that an organ can only have one purpose.

All I can say is that I wish liberals would STFU about guns.
In cities guns are a nuisance. Combine guns with hopeless young men with no future and carnage results. Last week a man was shot a couple of block away from me. Two others the month before. In the suburbs, guns hardly matter, violence is low anyways at least compared to what I’m used to. In Rural America guns along with beer and cable TV are the only things that keep a man sane.
And that man in the pickup truck with the gun under the seat. We need him. Because we need him to help us make sure that the man in the hood has hope and a future.

But then these guns get smuggled into the cities. Most guns used in crime in New York don’t come from New York; they are sold legally in the South and then smuggled north.
That’s a really good analogy, but I feel like it applies more to men than to women. All men should own a gun and follow the above guidelines, and should appear to really love killing stuff. All women should … I dunno … wear targets? Live in a society that values Men Owning Guns but be forbidden from owning or shooting one themselves? Men should shoot only women, but secretly hope they don’t die? Something like that. Good one!

actually, i do not believe that has been established. statistics on that matter go both ways, with some seemingly good studies (i.e., even if you discount the nutball Lott) indicating you may be exactly wrong about that.
the problem seems to be that a lot of instances of armed self-defence do not involve shots being actually fired, and so may not be reported in crime statistics. hence, you’ve pretty much got to run a survey to find out what the real social benefit of guns contra crime might be, and seemingly everybody who’s tried to do that has left themselves open to charges of bias.
yeah, but so what? if we assume that humans are in general trustworthy, law-abiding people, then the good guys will outnumber — hence outgun — the bad guys, on average. instances of persecution and rioting should be exceptions, then, and not the rule; adding more arms should arm more peaceful people, and could provide a net benefit through intimidating the minority of klansmen and thugs out there.

All I can say is that I wish liberals would STFU about guns.
I’m a liberal and a gun owner. I think it’s fun to go shoot holes in paper targets, and it gives me a sense of security that I have something that I might be able to use to defend my family if the need ever arises (but note: I do not want to ever have to use it against anotehr person–though I will if I have no alternative).
That said, I also believe in reasonable gun control. It seems to me that guns are an issue we’ve become collectively cuckoo about–emotions run so high on both sides that no one’s willing to be reasonable about it any more. I think some gun control is good–registering helps keep people responsible–but outlawing them, or making the laws so restrictive it isn’t practical to have one, is stupid and unnecessary.
As a liberal, my definition of gun control is being able to hit the target you want….
Conversely, I also think that any weapon that has a substnatial chance of taking out bystanders as well as your target should be controlled….

I have to agree with Leon’s posting. I am probably not that liberal, but I do own a few firearms and have been raised around them all my life. I even used to do reloading. It does appear in the public these days that people have become more polarized regarding the issue of “Gun Control”. However, the firearm, like any other human invention can be harmful if you are clueless about how to use it safely. Like Leon, I prefer target shooting to hunting. It’s fun (with the appropriate safety measures) to watch a gallon paint explode after being hit with a .243(interesting physics, aerodynamics, and fluid dynamics there), or to try to see if you can actually hit the fly walking on your target at 50 yards. Never hit him yet, but it is fun trying.
Unfortunately, firearms have been misused by cretins ever since they were invented, so they have become a favorite hot topic. In some ways, it appears to me that some on the liberal side have used it as the answer to the conservatives stance on abortion. The people saying that firearms should be banned are just as myopic as the ones who say abortions should be banned.
Assuming, as Nomen said, that MOST PEOPLE are good, then both abortion and firearm ownership becomes an issue of education of public about the possible impact of either issue. (I hate to say consequences, because that is almost always used as a way to point out the downside to something).

Well there certainly seem to be a lot in the projects around where I live. Yet no one is willing to put their money where their mouth is to fix the problem. The left talks endlessly gun control and suffer one electoral defeat after another over it. And the Right blathers on about personal responsibility as if the young men of Bayview made their world.
i agree that inner-city decay is a huge social problem in the USA, and a huge social justice problem, that badly needs addressing. i wish i had a good notion of how best to alleviate it, but it’s one of those things that still fall in the blind spots of my understanding of this country. i doubt gun control can do much to help it, though; that would just address the symptoms, not the cause, and likely couldn’t be enforced anyway.
i too wish the democratic party would grow a spine and quit losing elections by wimping out of the actual political struggle they have to do. but even if they did, well, two parties to choose the less evil from doesn’t seem that much better than a one-party system to somebody who grew up in a multiparty parliamentarianism, as i did. :-/

My feeling is that guns are the great equalizer in a violent world. There will always be violence because its the easiest way to get things. Luckily most people have been conditioned not to be violent and it sticks. Some people; it doesn’t stick. There’s nothing stopping anyone from doing anything. The law comes after the fact.
That’s one area I think liberals fall down on the job. They’re for equalizing everything else. Affirmative action. Diversity. Political correctness. But self defense? No, you can’t be equal there.
Beliefs have consequences, and false beliefs can have dangerous consequences. It’s OK to be biased in favor of truth and against lies and to judge beliefs based on their truth content. Some people even think that that’s preferable to accepting all beliefs no matter how nonsensical, harmful, or unsupported by evidence.
I agree with you on liberals and guns, though. Some people seem to think that if you could uninvent guns, humans would suddenly magically stop hurting each other; they need to read more history. Gun control can’t possibly address the root causes of human violence and is of dubious effectiveness at impeding the symptoms.

And I suppose the fact that every comparison of international statistics I’ve ever seen shows a vastly lower rate of violent crimes in developed countries where guns (particularly handguns) aren’t readily available is just a coincidence (and the same for statistics for individual countries showing a marked decline in violent crime after gun availability was curbed).
Anyway, I don’t think gun control advocates’ general position is that “if you could uninvent guns, humans would suddenly magically stop hurting each other”; it’s merely a recognition of the fact that guns are by far the most effective and efficient instruments of “hurting each other” ever available to the general public, and that the demonstrable cost of the proliferation of handguns in particular far outweighs any claimed benefits that stand up to scrutiny. While there may be some gun control advocates who feel that way, the position described, when presented as an opinion typical of “liberals,” is purely a strawbogeyman.
comparing violence statistics between countries is inherently dodgy. you’ve got different methods of classifying events as “violent” or otherwise in the different countries, different methods of collecting the statistics, different political pressures influencing the numbers, different economical and societal pressures influencing the actual raw data, and so on and on.
trying to use such statistics to compare effects of a single variable, such as gun ownership, is even worse. single variables can too easily get lost in the quagmire of other, interrelated variables that might be termed “culture” — and which differ wildly between countries.
i emigrated from one country and culture (northern europe) to another, relatively very similar, place (northern great lakes region, USA), and the differences in cultures i’ve had to face are so pervasive i can’t begin to see any way to control for them when comparing statistics between the two. add in more countries and cultures, and your statistical control problems explode in your face. sorry, but any such comparison will have to be almost inhumanly carefully done before it might even possibly sway my mind.
besides, as applicable to the USA specifically, we have competing statistics that go the other way. general crime rates here have been steadily declining for a few decades now, even as firearms (and especially handgun) availability has increased. more and more states have made concealed carry of handguns possible for the general population over the last twenty years, and it doesn’t seem to have budged crime statistics in either direction, anywhere it’s happened. that seems to me a much more relevant statistic than any numbers from overseas, to me, at least when trying to set policy for the USA.
after a few hours of further thought (and a Guinness, which always helps), i’d like to comment a bit further on Azkyroth’s note.
he made the point of comparing “developed” countries to one another. there was an excellent reason for this; that reason accepts implicitly that some countries simply are not comparable to one another. comparing the USA to Nigeria would provide a dramatic contrast, but putting those statistics up against one another just is not valid.
the point i tried to make is that this distinction between nations should perhaps be considered more important than even Azkyroth implicitly held it to be, that even the “developed” nations may be sufficiently different that their respective figures may not be comparable — or even if they are, that they are still different enough that causal relationships involving single variables may not be easily discernible from the aggregate data.
he also made a point of mentioning firearms are very efficient tools for hurting people. granted. but that is not their only notable attribute. they are also remarkably usable tools, in that they are available and manipulable by a vast number of people who might not be able to make use of any other tools for violence; there’s a reason guns are called “great equalizers”.
since we can’t uninvent violence, i do not wish to reserve its use to any specific over- or underclasses. i think that would be very dangerous, and potentially unjust. i lean strongly towards the “democratic kinds of weapons” line of thought George Orwell famously propagated in one of his essays. having an efficient kind of weapon available widely and cheaply, and moreover have it be easy to learn and to use, actually seems like a good idea to me, because the alternative is to have efficient violence only available to a select few. selected by whom? once so selected, we are likely to be stuck with them, since getting rid of them might just take violence…

It can change how (and if) you grow and age. It can create birth defects, affect cellular development (cancer) and cause symptoms or pain. It can affect people and animal’s behavior and alter blooming/fruiting cycles of plants and trees. It (or other highly technological systems within their power) can alter the weather and transport objects, even large objects like planets, across the universe instanteously.
Or into the center of stars for disposal.
When you speak with another telepathically, you are communicating with the computer, and the content may or may not be passed on. Based on family history they instruct the computer to role play to accomplish strategic objectives, making people believe it is a friend, loved one or “god” asking them to do something wrong. This is their way of using temptation to hurt people:::::evil made blood lines disfavored initially and evil will keep people out of “heaven” ultimately. Too many people would fall for temptation and do anything they thought pleased the gods, improving their chances to get in. Perhaps they are deceived by “made guys”, puppets who strategically ply evil for the throne (celebrities, BofD/CEO/VPs, politicians), temporary progress designed to mislead them or empty favors used to disceive them. Some may experience “perceived pressure”, where the gods think through the victim that a certain behavior is expected/desirable and compell the individual into the deed. Some people think they’re partners. Being evil hurts 99.99% of those who do it. The people have been corrupted, segmented and have lost their way. Nothing has changed from when we were children::if you want to go to heaven you have to be good.
Capitalizing on obedience, leading people deeper into evil by using deceit is one way to thin the ranks of the saved/limit how much time they receive and use the peasantry to prey on one another, dividing the community (migration to the suburbs, telepathic communication, isolation of women) in the Age of the Disfavored.
You want to set a goal of empithy and compassion for all, for we are all disfavored::::Other people’s disfavor is manifested in their particular way, just as your disfavfor is manifested in your particular way.
There are many examples throughout 20th century life of how they instilled distractions into society so people wouldn’t find the path and ascend, a way to exclude those whose family history of evil makes them undesirable:::materialism, radio, sports, movies, popular music, television, video games, the internet, shopping. Today high pay creates contentment/ability to distract self so people don’t seek more and instead depend on what they are told, subject to deception in a captive environment.
They gods (Counsel/Management Team/ruling species) have deteriorated life on earth precipitously in the last 40 years, from abortion to pornography, widespread drug use and widespread casual (gay) sex, single-parent households and latchkey kids. The earth’s elders, hundreds and thousands of years old, are disgusted and have become indifferent.
The clues all suggest a very telling conclusion::this is Earth’s end stage, and there are signs tectonic plate subduction would be the method of disposal:::Earth’s axis will shift breaking continental plates free and initiating mass subduction. Much as Italy’s boot and the United States shaped like a workhorse (with a fat ass) are clues, so is the planet Uranus a clue, it’s axis rotated on its side. There is another geographic clue in the perfect fit between grossly disfavored Africa and South America, two peas in a pod. I realize the Mayans were further north, but Latin America may be taken as one. For thousands of years young people were matched at age 14 because they were ready for sexual relations. They were matched by elders or matchmakers who were granted priveledge with Artificial Intelligence and matched couples based on favor.

I recommend you reflect on this experience, and pray for guidance, for then the recall may be stronger. Being female is an advantage and this experience you had years ago can help you see the path and find your way.
Throughout history the ruling species bestowed favor upon people or cursed their bloodline into a pattern of disfavor for many generations to come. Now in the 21st century people must take it upon themselves to try to correct their family’s problems, undoing centuries worth of abuse and neglect. The goal is to fix your problems and get out::::
1. Before children become corrupted (Halloween & Christmas (among others), get out via parents)
2. Before you lose your virginity/become corrupted by casual sex, and ultimately
3. Before you have children.
This is why they have created so many distractions for young people:::sports, video games, popular music, the internet, shopping, parties, too much homework, materialism, anything that consumes their time::to ensure that doesn’t ocurr. Not heeding the clues and warnings, getting wrapped up in your life and ultimatly having children is a bad thing. Just as your parents and your grandparents, you too have failed. Having children is a sign you lost your chance.
Parents need to sacrifice for their children. Your children are more important than you. They are the ones who have the opportunity now, and parents must sacrifice to ensure they give their children the very best chance they can. Asking people to neglect their children emotionally is a sign they don’t want you to go, and complying may finish the parents off for good. (Having gay children (children with gay experiences) is a clue parents complied with whatever was asked of them.) Improve your relationship with the gods and they may not ask in the first place or they may permit you the courage to say “No.” to their requests.
Do your research. Appeal to the royalty of your forefathers for help. They are all still alive, for royalty has great favor, and your appeals will be heard. Obtain a sufficient list for some may not want to assist you; perhaps some of your family’s problems are internal. Keep an open mind to every possibility for they suggest matriarchal lineage is the norm.
Ask them for help, request guidance, for somewhere in your family history one of your forefathers created an offense that cast your family into this pattern of disfavor, which perhaps is manifested in the evil you committ.
I suspect they will offer you clues, and when you decipher these clues go to those whom consider you an enemy and beg for foregiveness:::Find a path to an empithetic ear among your enemies and try to make amends. Again through discovery obtain a respectable list in case some among them refuse to help.
Don’t forget to ask for forgiveness from the throne, the Counsel and the Management Team, for the source of all disfavor began with them:::they pushed or requested/complied your forefather into his offense and made his decendants evil. Perhaps they didn’t like him or maybe your family was among those who had to pay for the entire village. We see this type of behavior today as they single out a family member to pay for the whole family and how they singled out Africa to pay for the human race. (Never have a negative thought about the gods. Try to purify your mind of these thoughts and recognize the urgency of imporving your relationship with the gods.)
Heal the disfavor with your enemies and with the Counsel/Management Team/ruling species, for the source of all disfavor began with them, the ability to forgive and respect in light of the disturbing truth revealed being the final test of the disfavored before they ascend.
The gods use the Celtics as scapegoats, initiating the annual practice of wickedness on Halloween by creating this event a thousand years ago. They use it to justify making the celebration of evil acceptable behavior among the disfavored of the 20th century.
The celebration of Halloween has intensified as the Age of the Disfavored has become more pronounced and it is not by accident:::Holloween has changed in the last 50 years, its practice more widespread as time wore on, and Hollywood was used to justify making the practice of evil socially acceptable.
Halloween is a terrible corruptor of children, as is Santa Claus (the similarity between the names “Santa” and “Satan” is no coincidence). The Celtics are used to justify corrupting the children through the event of Halloween and this helps explain their disfavor.
I wonder if recent influence of the paganistic historical roots of the event is a way to legitimize the event among the disfavored, perhaps make it more inclusive (adults)?
You’re the disfavored. Purism is the best course of action (the Ahmish in the United States is the clue suggesting this). You don’t have breathing room to engage in hedonistic activities like Halloween.
They refuse to address black disfavor on a macro level. The Counsel/Management Team/ruling species (the gods) abuse black people so hard, from east African drought/famine to AIDS in Africa, the crack epiemic to gang membership, black-on-black violence to mass incarceration of their young. They refuse to address the issue of the prison industrial complex and its wholesale warehousing of young black men.
Christianity is a dumping ground for the disfavored.
They share the gods didn’t like Jesus for he helped the disfavored and taught them the right way to think:::Be Christ-like!!! Subsequently they twisted the concept, dietized the prophet and made Christianity’s disfavored followers irrationally defensive.
Every prophet can teach us something and we should be attentive to each.
