Hey-o, Madison!

I’m about to depart for this event:

Mary and I have 7 hours of driving ahead of us. It’s going to be no fun at all, although it looks like the meeting will definitely be worth it. One peeve, though: the two speakers I most want to hear are Kevin Padian and Elliott Sober, and they’re both scheduled to speak tonight. I doubt that I’ll be able to get there in time. Could someone tell them both to wait until 9:00 or so to start their talks? Just for me?

All right, if they rudely refuse to hold up the entire conference for me, I expect someone who’s there to review it all for me on Saturday. Pantomime over beer at lunch would be acceptable, and entertaining.

(Also: hashtag for the conference is #ftf1. Follow the festivities on Twitter.)

If you miss those speakers tonight I was assured there would be video put on the AHA YouTube channel later.

I’m going! It’ll be my first atheist conference so I’m pretty excited.

I’m so proud of AHA for putting this together! Of course it’s the semester I’m studying abroad, but I’ll try to catch you at the European Atheists Convention in Cologne later this summer!

You really need to get a personal assistant to handle all you public appearances and cart you around, so you don’t need to stress over it yourself.

You have to make such trips fun for yourselves. You know, have music you like or some recorded radio show on the car stereo, or have the passenger read short stories to the driver (not the other way around), perhaps practice your Spanish or French or Chinese or German or whatever, have a picnic AND a proper (but light) meal along the way.

Do not engage in marital disputes while driving.

I miss that place…time was I had friends and a lover and a future there. They have the most amazing small stores in the capitol, an impressive bus service, and the most delicious bratwurst I’ve ever had. They even had beer I didn’t hate and I hate beer. All that’s gone now of course. Some days I wonder if any of it ever actually happened.

Hope all goes well there, PZ :)

It’s not gone. It’s still there. Visit.

I’m lucky enough to be able to make it back to Madison at least twice a year even though I moved away 23 years ago. The brats are still there. Terrace is still there, grown larger, and bands still play in the warm weather. The Rat is still there, albeit I haven’t smelled the sweet sweet smell of faraway places wafting through there in years (nor have I heard Bob Marley’s Jammin playing on the jukebox there in years — I wonder if there’s a connection). The beer is still there with a much larger selection now. Really, the only thing that’s gone downhill is that they got rid of the bristle dartboard in the Stiftskeller and replaced it with one of those toy plastic dart boards with the beeping and flashing lights.

PZ, have a beer for me out on the Terrace while you’re there, head up State Street and have a gyro at the Parthenon, and then top it off with a late night visit to Greenbush Bakery (the old Donuts Unlimited) for some fresh donuts.

Thank you so much for coming! Just heard you speak this morning – it was great seeing you “in real life”. ;)
