The mayor of Warren, MI., (That would be Ed Brayton’s home state) had a new insult to hurl at us yesterday. When asked about a pending lawsuit where an atheist was allegedly discriminated against while Christians were given the green light, Mayor Fouts broke every irony meter in existence:
HuffPo — In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Fouts defended the city’s authorization of a “prayer station” as a source of guidance. “They are just there if someone wishes to seek solace or guidance from them,” Fouts told the AP on Wednesday. “The atheist station does not serve that purpose. It will not contribute to community values or helping an individual out.”
Comparing atheists to Nazis and white supremacists, Fouts argued that Marshall’s “reason station” would be fundamentally antagonistic to prayer.
“The city has certain values that I don’t believe are in general agreement with having an atheist station, nor in general agreement with having a Nazi station or Ku Klux Klan station,” Fouts added. “I cannot accept or will not allow a group that is disparaging of another group to have a station here.
“Wow! Fouts is worried about atheists disparaging other people, while comparing us to the worst monsters in recent history? The definition of clueless and irony just got new entries. Next up, Kim Kardashian will ban people from her legendary parties who might someday become famous for no reason. Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton will no longer consort with coffee drinkers because those folks might one day try harder drugs. Sarah Palin refuses to share any stage with former VP candidates because they might not be fully qualified for the job … Make up your own, it’s fun and cathartic.

It may not. That’s one reason that I’ve memorized most of Epicurus’ recommendations for how to live. They are helpful, profoundly anti-theistic, and deliciously pre-christian. When someone says something about how atheism doesn’t help people’s morals, you can fire back with something wonderful like this:

The antidote to religion, in my experience, is not its denial. The antidote is philosophy. There aren’t a lot of ignorant christians who can argue with Camus.
Christianity in particular actually lacks a philosophy, because at its core it’s just authoritarianism. Jesus never had to explain why anything, because he was just the mouthpiece of the great raging all powerful stupid. Christians who actually think about what they are teaching are toe-curlingly insecure about that, because they know it leaves them open to critiques they cannot reply to.
