Romney supporters worried about bigotry while his surrogates deal the race card

In the earlier article there was mention Mormons are worried about bigotry in the event Romney wins the 2012 presidential election. But Romney and his buddies are smug as a bug in a rug when it comes to profiting from bigotry of their own:

(MSNBC) — Last night, Romney was asked about his association with the nation’s most famous “birther.” His answer didn’t address the controversial topic. “I don’t agree with all the people who support me and my guess is they don’t all agree with everything I believe in. But I need to get 50.1% or more, and I’m appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people,” he said, per NBC’s Garrett Haake. By the way, msnbc.com’s Mike O’Brien today will have a more in-depth piece looking at Romney and Trump.

Make no mistake, birtherism is the current slightly more acceptable incarnation of good old-fashioned racism. It’s about capitalizing on the simmering conservative prejudice toward brown skin and funny names, bigotry pure and simple, not to mention ugly and evil. Bill Mahr had a great piece this last week, where Romney’s marriage certificate stood in for Obama’s birth certificate, I’ll see if I can find it. But even that isn’t in the same trashy league as what Trump is pitching on behalf of Mitt Romney.

Did Romney just basically say, “I don’t care about your beliefs, I care about your vote”? Am I the only one reading it like that?

  2. gshelley says

Why should that surprise you? Romney has shown no evidence of caring about his own beliefs as long as it helps him get the vote.

mittens is only concerned with religious bigotry and then only if its directed at his chosen dogma. Anyone else doesn’t matter to him.

50.1%? Did the Popular Vote Amendment pass when I wasn’t looking?

And Lorax: Romney doesn’t care. Spread it around.

Bill Maher – satire at it’s very best.
I don’t always agree with his attitudes, but I never miss his show.
It’s always good for a few belly laughs while I enjoy an adult drink.

Wonder what if anything rachel Maddow has said about this? She’s even more awesome than Maher is, YMMV obviously.

Do I vaguely recall Trump being an early favourite for Republican nominee with this “birther” nonsense? (Before B. H. Obama released his certificate which we’re now being told is fake?) What did Romeny say about it way back a few months ago when they were rivals I wonder?
