Farewell Leonard Cohen

I have only just found out that Leonard Cohen has died at the age of 82. I seem to be the only person in my immediate vicinity who has any idea as to who he was, so I am grieving for the loss in silence.

“It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away. We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries,”

What more can I really add to that? Anything that comes to mind just seems banal.

Instead, I’ll be listening to Hallelujah on repeat, for a while.

This is total déjà vu for me. I was very casual fan of Bowie and until I heard his last album a few weeks before he died. I was completely blown away and went back in his catalog and realized how amazing he was.

Same thing with Cohen: I was only a casual fan until I heard his last album, which came out a couple weeks back and is fucking great. RIP

I was just talking to a co-worker about this at lunch today – she knows him as a “Canadian icon” (her words) but says she can’t name a single song by him. I found that shocking – she’s not a kid or anything, she must be at least 35 years old. I said that I thought he might have been the most famous living Canadian – people all over the world know, and cover, his songs. She thought about this for a minute and said, “no, that can’t be right. Justin Bieber.” I had to concede on that point, sadly.

I was just listening to Cohen’s CD “The Future” yesterday, totally coincidentally (it was in the morning, hours before his death was announced.) Lots of eerily prescient lyrics on there – he wrote this one over 24 years ago! Sigh.

It’s coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
    It’s coming from the feel
    that this ain’t exactly real,
or it’s real, but it ain’t exactly there.
    From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
