The Consequences Commence

I am sure that, by now, you have all heard of the highly discriminatory “bathroom bills” that have passed in North Carolina and Mississippi, and which are being introduced in other States as well.

Already, we are seeing the unintended consequences of this legislation.

In this shocking video, an unidentified young woman is manhandled and ejected from a ladies’ bathroom by male police. Because she didn’t adhere to their ideas of how a woman is “supposed to dress,” they accused her of being a male and invaded her space, humiliating and insulting her in their ignorance and bigotry. While onlookers yell at the cops that “she’s a girl” and inform them that she is a lesbian who chooses to not conform to conventional gender standards, the cops angrily demand ID of “sir” and then frisk the woman after she is unable to produce identification.

Follow the link to watch the video. Apparently, you need ID to use the bathroom in North Carolina now.

Shame on you.

I take issue with one sentence from that report:

Is this what “Make America Great Again” means?

No, it isn’t. It’s what “Yes We Can” means.

Can we police bathroom usage based on a cop’s idea of what a woman is supposed to look like? YES WE CAN. Obama is President. This isn’t something that can be pinned on Trump, and it’s egregious in the extreme to pretend it is, especially as it’s not even a Republican in the White House.

WTF were the cops doing in the women’s bathroom (especially the MALE officer)? What basis are they using to eject someone from a bathroom? The law, as it stands, does not provide for any enforcement of the policy. I would like to know where this took place, and I would hope it gets wide distribution.

    Maybe.

“Anywhere within the city [of Oxford Alabama]’s police jurisdiction, it is now a criminal offense for transgender people to use restrooms that match their gender identity unless they have undergone surgery and successfully changed the gender marker on their birth certificate. Each individual violation will result in a $500 fine or up to six months in jail.”

I was speaking specifically of the NC law. The place where the video referenced allegedly took place.

    sonofrojblake @3:
Are you perhaps commenting on the wrong blogpost? There is no mention on this page of Alabama except in your comment.

Sorry, I am commenting in the right place but perhaps was unclear. My point (such as it was) was that
    (a) the law may very well be on the side of the police already, as it is in Oxford Alabama and
    (b) if it isn’t, it could be by close of play tomorrow.
These developments are coming thick (and I do mean thick) and depressingly fast.

The law in NC was passed in a one-day called special session in response to the Charlotte anti-discrimination ordinance. The lawmakers in NC failed to include ANY language regarding enforcement or penalties. The video incident allegedly took place in NC after the law was passed and before any amendments have been added to it. My comment was specifically addressing the video and the NC law. So nothing in the law gives the police (or any security) authority to do what they did in the video (at this time).

Sure, it could change “by close of play tomorrow”, but that is not what I was referring to. I will say that ALL these types of laws are HORRIBLE and mean-spirited, and they were passed by those in a declining demographic with a chip on their shoulder the size of a boulder. They have been pissed-off since last June, and they are doing everything they can think of to try to stop the progress of human rights and to preserve their positions of power.

Not really a consequence but it will make it easier. As one commenter pointed out, this is a video of unknown provenance that dates back to at least December. Also, everyone wearing a uniform in the video appears to have same badge on their clothes and they identify the wearers as being security. If any are police, they are moonlighting and (presumably) not acting in an official capacity as police officers.
