This Is Hardcore

I’m not a fan of criminal justice systems, since they are often poorly concealed state authortarianism, i.e.: in the US it’s a racist/classist arm of the racist/classist state. Ugh. But this tickles my fancy, right now.

At least eight people who have refused to wear masks during the coronavirus pandemic have been forced to dig graves for people who died from covid-19 in the province of East Java, Indonesia, according to a report from the Jakarta Post.

“There are only three available gravediggers at the moment, so I thought I might as well put these people to work with them,” local politician Suyono told Tribun News, according to an English-language translation by the Jakarta Post.

The article notes that anti-maskers who are being punished are not forced to handle the dead bodies and are instead doing the manual labor of digging graves and preparing the plots with wooden planks to support the caskets. Public health officials in the district of Cerme handle the bodies using full-body protective equipment, ensuring there’s no risk of exposure.

Since they’ve been able to do cell phone tracking, to determine who helped spread the Covid after the Sturgis bike rally, the US has a great big untapped labor pool, just waiting to haul a few shovel-loads of reality check.

Wow. That *is* pretty hardcore. I’m not sure an anti-masker is capable of learning that their antics are contributing to the deaths, but I would hope they were, and I would hope they would learn from the experience.

I read this elsewhere and have no problem with it. As long as they’re not being forced to do it in the heat of the day and allowed water, it’s punishment, not abuse. It’s still 30+C here in Taiwan, so I imagine it’s warmer down south.

seems reasonable. if you’re going to advocate for a policy you should have to pick up the bodies, or did the graves in this case.
