May Be Experiencing Mild Turbulence…

… I’m going to a small conference up in Chicago the next couple days. So I’ll be driving (to avoid the homeland security fol-de-rol) and otherwise may be too occupied to say much. If I seem uncharacteristically quiet, that’s what’s what. It doesn’t mean I hate you, or you’re the last commenter standing. Whether I post or not is going to depend on my activity level at the event.

I’ll be heading home down the corridor from Chicago to State College PA (I-80 mostly), heading out today, heading back monday.

And. OH LOOK, Google has figured out another way to ‘sneakily’ include advertisements. It’s “targeted” advertisement because Google apparently was smart enough to realize that if I was asking about a driving route from here to there, I might prefer to fly. If Google keeps this up, I’m going to have to buy an old-school GPS again.

Those little icons of the people with shovels: those are marketing people who are going to stop me along my way and make me special offers.

This Clashes with something in my memory:

I’m all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I can’t remember the special offers
    Of guaranteed personality.

    Have a good trip.

    Sorry. It actually is this:

I’m all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for that special offer
    A guaranteed personality

Showing the flight is fair and even useful, I should think. But they need to work on their accuracy. Where are the hours spent waiting on the tarmac and various in arrival and departure halls? Why is the indignity of airport security not included in the price tag?* I freely confess I would happily rely on google estimates, at least for initial planning, but only if the hassles of air travel are properly accounted for.

On a related note, I think the route planner should also have a pessimism slider for contingency planning. Some of us have travelled before, at least once, and were left too traumatised to ever trust any timetable again. (At the worst setting civilisation has collapsed, roadways are thronged by ravenous zombies and every motorway is nonetheless jam-packed with weekend tourists and construction sites.)

*Accurate predictions may require additional information about the user, e.g skin colour, religion and maybe beard length.

Chicago no longer has rail service either?

(Amtrak has yet to repair the Florida-New Orleans route, since Katrina.)

I’d have preferred not to drive but I am hauling recording gear, studio lights, light stands, tripods, mixing deck, cameras, a drone, lithium battery bricks…
Sometimes its good to throw it all in the hatchback and drive.

I can see why you wouldn’t want to try to explain that lot to homeland security.
