What next for the Epstein investigation?

The death of Jeffrey Epstein in jail has caused a great deal of anger among his many victims who were hoping that his trial would serve to bring justice. They now fear that the whole investigation may shut down. If it does, there will be huge sighs of relief among all Epstein’s friends and associates. But the prosecutors in the case say that the investigations will continue. The vast scale of the sex trafficking of minors means that there had to have been other people involved. One of the charges against Epstein was a conspiracy charge and that means that other people’s roles were also being investigated.

In a statement released Saturday, Geoffrey S. Berman, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said the investigation into Epstein’s sex trafficking case will continue. Berman said his office’s investigation into the “conduct charged in the Indictment — which included a conspiracy count — remains ongoing.” The mention of the conspiracy count suggested prosecutors may be turning their focus to Epstein’s past associates.

At the very least Ghislaine Maxwell, who seemed to be very close to Epstein, has to be in the crosshairs because she must be privy to a lot of information. So far, we have not heard much about her because of the focus on Epstein but that will change.

As CBS News correspondent Holly Williams reports, documents unsealed on Friday contain allegations that Maxwell, a close acquaintance of Epstein’s, played an “important role” in the late billionaire financier’s “sexual abuse ring,” directing an underage girl to have sex with Epstein and others. Maxwell strenuously denies the allegations. Her current whereabouts are unknown.

“There are multiple victims who claim that Ghislaine Maxwell was a personal participant in recruiting them for Jeffrey Epstein, that she assisted in the scheduling of appointments, multiple victims being delivered to Epstein on a daily basis over an extended period of time,” attorney Jack Scarola, who has represented several of Epstein’s alleged victims, told CBS News. “There are allegations that Miss Maxwell was an active participant in the sexual abuse.”

Attorney general Bill Barr also says that the investigation will continue.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr on Monday warned that Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged accomplices “should not rest easy” just because the accused sex trafficker will never see his day in court.

“Let me assure you that case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein,” Barr said during his keynote address Monday at the National Fraternal Order of Police’s biennial conference in New Orleans. “Any co-conspirators should not rest easy. Victims deserve justice and will get it.”

I hope he means it because the victims deserve their day in court.

What’s next? More speculation, probably. A preliminary autopsy says Epstein’s broken neck could be either strangulation or suicide. Neither has been proven, and neither has been excluded.

Autopsy finds broken bones in Jeffrey Epstein’s neck, deepening questions around his death

An autopsy found that financier Jeffrey Epstein suffered multiple breaks in his neck bones, according to two people familiar with the findings, deepening the mystery about the circumstances around his death.

Among the bones broken in Epstein’s neck was the hyoid bone, which in men is near the Adam’s apple. Such breaks can occur in those who hang themselves, particularly if they are older, according to forensics experts and studies on the subject. But they are more common in victims of homicide by strangulation, the experts said.

The details are the first findings to emerge from the autopsy of Epstein, a convicted sex offender and multimillionaire in federal custody on charges of sex trafficking. He died early Saturday morning after guards found him hanging in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan and he could not be revived.

“If, hypothetically, the hyoid bone is broken, that would generally raise questions about strangulation, but it is not definitive and does not exclude suicidal hanging,” he said.
