Hasan Minhaj has a new show on Netflix

The Daily Show alumnus Hasan Minhaj has been given a new weekly show titled Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj on Netflix that premiers today Sunday, October 28 at 7:00pm. He has been signed up for 32 weeks in advance, so he has been given a longer period to establish a rhythm and voice, unlike Michele Wolf whose show was canceled after just 10 episodes.

Minhaj was interviewed about the show and he said that he did not want to to become the ‘Indian John Oliver’ and it will be interesting to see how he distinguishes his show from the other political comedy shows.

Here’s the trailer.

    Mano,

I really want Minhaj to succeed—as I did Michele Wolf, whom I stopped watching after 2.5 episodes—here and having 32 episodes to find his voice ought to be helpful in that, but after watching the first outing, I’m not feeling a lot of hope.

The weather-personesque stage was annoying and his delivery was off. What he was able to do in any of his brilliant short pieces for Trevor Noah just didn’t come through in long form.

Three alumni of The Daily Show—Samantha Bee, Stephen Colbert and John Oliver—have successfully made the transition; three—Larry Wilmore (with whom I stuck to the end and was saddened to see cancled), Michele Wolf and Jordan Klepper—have not. Hasan Minhaj may be the tie breaker.

    I’m rooting for his success.

    Jeff
