Going a bit too far?

Pretty much everyone has some relative that they find embarrassing for some reason and on the occasion of getting married may prefer that one’s friends and in-laws not meet them because of the awkwardness that might ensue. The problem that arises during weddings, especially in traditional societies, is that one is obliged to invite relatives and also have less control of who will meet whom.

One Chinese groom may have gone too far in having his in-laws not meet his relatives when it was discovered that all the 200 invited guests on his side were actors who had been paid to attend.

In interviews with regional TV station Shaanxi TV “guests” said they were paid 80 yuan ($12; £9) by the groom, named as Mr Wang, for the day to pose as family and friends. Some said they are normally taxi drivers and students, and one man revealed a conversation he had with the groom on social media platform WeChat, negotiating a price for him to be there.

The groom has been arrested though it is not clear what exactly the offense is. What is also not clear is the motive for his actions. While relative avoidance seems the most speculated reason, it seems a little excessive.

I agree. I probably wouldn’t invite many of my relatives to my wedding, either, but I’d be more forthright: “Eh, no. hey all suck. Well, okay, maybe my Mom.”

A little excessive, yes, he could probably have got them for 70 yuan.
I was wondering about the arrest too. Perhaps it was for his own safety. I suppose it depends who was paying for the food and drink -- could be fraud.
