To no one’s surprise Ted Cruz says that he has accepted Donald Trump’s invitation to speak at the Republican National Convention that begins on July 18, thus signaling that too has caved in to the Trump juggernaut.
Sen. Ted Cruz, Donald Trump’s former chief rival for the GOP nomination, will speak at the Republican National Convention later this month, the Texas senator told reporters after the two met Thursday in Washington.
Cruz told reporters Thursday that the real estate mogul offered his former primary rival a speaking slot during the meeting and Cruz accepted. He added that he and Trump did not discuss an endorsement.
Cruz said that Trump offered Cruz a speaking slot and that he accepted.
“We had a positive and productive meeting this morning with Donald Trump. Donald asked me to speak at the Republican convention and I told him I’d be happy to do so,” Cruz told reporters.
This is the same Cruz that during the primary process and after had issued blistering attacks on Trump, calling him a “pathological liar”, “utterly amoral”, “a narcissist at a level I don’t think this country’s ever seen”, and “a serial philanderer”, while Trump in return had called Cruz a liar with an unattractive wife whose father may have been involved in the murder of JFK. And now suddenly they are best friends forever and we can expect Cruz at the convention to say what a wonderful guy Trump is.
Cruz is as big an opportunist as Trump and the thought that he would hold out on supporting the Republican nominee was always laughable because that would hurt his chances for any future run for the presidency. The only question was when and how he would cave and now we know.
The big dilemma for Republican politicians: to hitch your wagon to Trump, or not. For some reason, I don’t feel sorry for them.
Seventeen Republican jerks ran for the nomination, and the biggest jerk took it. What does that say about their party?
I’m a hopeless optimist. I’m still hoping the UK will find some way to ignore the outcome of the referendum and stay in the EU. I’m still hoping the FBI or someone will indict Clinton for the email thing and Sanders steps up to be the candidate. And I’m still hoping presumptive nominee Trump is somehow ousted and replaced by some party apparatchik and the Republicans implode completely as a result, and Sanders gets to be Pres. Come on world, if I dream it hard enough, can you oblige?
I don’t see anything in the quoted article saying that Cruz would endorse Trump or say nice things about him. Here’s hoping he uses the opportunity to let loose some verbal daggers.
You gotta admire the way the republicans trolled themselves. There has to be some kind of dubious achievement award for that. Hopefully, not the presidency.

I just don’t see that happening. It would only worsen Cruz’s image within the party as someone who is not to be trusted and no one will ever agree to share a platform with him.
You mean more people would get to know him, and thus come to feel about him the way his colleagues in the U.S. Senate do. And for that matter, everyone who has ever worked with him.
Now why would Trump want such a liar as “Lyin’ Ted” to speak on his behalf? Its almost as if Trump knows that everything he says is shit.
Oh, when Trump and Cruz called each other those names -- that was just banter. (In the UK, “banter” is now the go-to excuse when some public figure is caught out saying or emailing some particularly revolting piece of bigotry.)
