How the not-so-mighty fallen

Stephen Colbert, with a stuffed ferret named Caligula in his arms, pays tribute and bids farewell to the victims of the latest culling of the Republican herd, with the dropping out of Chris Christie, Carly Fiorina, Rick Santorum, and Jim Gilmore.

As I understand it, as noted, the bad news is that campaign debts will not be forgiven. The good news remains that, per court ruling, the candidates dropping out can keep, and use as they please any campaign funds remaining. Which means that a political candidacy, if properly framed and run, might be the same profitable enterprise as outlined in the movie The Producers, but this version might actually pay off.

The candidates get all the press and attention, and, if they play their cards right, can emerge quite a bit richer than they went in. Money, praise, and attention … what more could an egomaniac want?

    .. To be President?

Jeb Bush of course has bowed out now. I must admit I was wrong about him being the eventual nominee -- and chalk it up, for once the richest guy didn’t win!
