Rowan County clerk Kim Davis has been released from jail. The odious Mike Huckabee just happened to be there at the time and seized on the fortuitous opportunity to make himself the center of attention and force Ted Cruz off the stage so that he could get hog all the attention. Didn’t the Bible teach Huckabee to share?

Davis has decided to take a few days off before returning to work, either on Friday or Monday. Meanwhile, five of her six deputies (the lone holdout being her son) are issuing marriage licenses in her absence as demanded by the US District Court judge David Bunning. Ten licenses have been issued so far, seven to same-sex couples, and one couple has returned to have their document legally filed.

Davis has vowed that when she returns, she will prevent the issuance of further licenses. One deputy Brian Mason has said that he will continue to issue licenses even if she orders him not to. So what will Davis do? Will she physically fight with her deputies over the forms? Will she summarily fire Mason? And if she does try to prevent the deputies, then there is every chance that judge Bunning will throw her back in jail. You can be sure that TV cameras will be there in full force to capture what is becoming increasingly a soap opera.

I found it ironic that Davis’s supporters are demanding that the deputies who defy Davis’s order to not issue licenses should be fired for ‘violating their oath of office’.

Ante Pavkovic, one of the people who helped organize pro-Davis rallies outside the Grayson, Kentucky, detention center where Davis was jailed, lectured the deputy clerks not to violate their oaths of office, like Bunning and the U.S. Supreme Court justices who backed gay marriage did.

“Do not join them in this any further, and if you can’t do that, then you should just quit,” Pavkovic, 49, of North Carolina, said, standing in the clerk’s office in Morehead, Kentucky.

He waved a sign in the faces of the deputy clerks that read, “Fire the cowardly clerks that are lawbreakers.” He was asked to leave by a deputy sheriff.

I wonder what Davis’s supporters would say if the deputies said that their religious beliefs required them to issue licenses and that they had to obey their god’s authority over that of a mere county clerk. Somehow I think irony would be lost on the kinds of people rallying to Davis’s side.
