The last hurrah for anti-gay bigots?

Jessica Williams of The Daily Show got all teary-eyed as she went to mingle with the opponents of same-sex marriage who gathered outside the US Supreme Court on the day they heard the case, because she thinks that the court will approve of such marriages and she may never get to see this bunch of losers together like this again.

(This clip aired on May 4, 2015. To get suggestions on how to view clips of The Daily Show and The Nightly Show outside the US, please see this earlier post. If the videos autoplay, please see here for a diagnosis and possible solutions.)

I don’t know if she is right but if the Supreme Court does allow same-sex marriage, these people are likely to go completely bonkers. They seem to have vested so much energy into opposing this, even more than abortion, that I don’t know how they will come to terms with it.

The problem is that since the gay population is diffused and they can’t stalk gay marriages like they do abortion clinics: they lose. And they know it. What this is, hopefully, is what psychologists call an “extinction burst” — a frantic bit of activity before a behavior stops because the organism finally learns it is pointless.

I wish I could believe that such public displays of anti-gay bigotry will go away abruptly, but I rather suspect the decline will be slow and drawn-out.

Oh you’ll see them together again as soon as their leaders find another bunch of folks to hate. There’s always someone to hate.

    True.

    1. I doubt if they really give two hoots about gays or gay marriage. The reason fewer and fewer care is that it doesn’t actually effect them.

    2. It’s not about the gays. It’s about the hate. Hate is its own reward and the basis of fundie xianity. No hate = No fundie xianity.

    3. And, the New Gays will be…atheists and Moslems. It’s already starting.
