The Obama-Fox relationship

Apparently it is a tradition for the US president to give an interview to a television network just before the Superb Owl game each year and this year the interviewer was Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly. I did not watch it, of course, because O’Reilly is a waste of time, a blowhard who tries to pretend that he is a serious journalist.

Jon Stewart uses the interview as a springboard to take an extended look at how Fox News has had a sustained campaign of disinformation. It illustrates the point I made in an earlier post, that a nation in which a major news organization, from which a significant number of people get their information, systematically and relentlessly drives a false narrative is one which is not going to end up well.

I was somewhat surprised (and pleased) to see that during the interview Obama had directly called them out on this practice which naturally made them throw a fit.

(These clips aired on February 4, 2014. To get suggestions on how to view clips of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report outside the US, please see this earlier post. If the videos autoplay, please see here for a diagnosis and possible solutions.)

    Anyone know how to prevent the clips from auto-playing? In this case I had all 3 playing together and diving for the pause buttons. Then I logged in to make this comment and had to repeat process.

    Obama is sooooo much more polished and articulate the O’Reilly. I think they’re both frauds but I’m programmed to be attracted to the one that sounds more cool, calm, and rational.

    @Sunday,

    Did you check out the information at the bottom of the post that tells you what to do about auto-play?

    @Mano,

    I missed it of course, sorry about that.

    I think my problem is a combination of Windows XP (a work machine -- we’ll be moving on soon), Firefox and Adblock. Things are working ok on my home machine which is Win7, Firefox+Adblock.

    If I complain again, you have my permission to point out this comment indicating that I am becoming forgetful.

    O’Reilly spent the whole time asserting tea party talking points and waiting for Obama to apologize. The nerve of the president to call him on it.
