Cue the war on Catholic nuns

I have written before (see here and here) about how the Vatican has cracked own on American nuns because they seem to be more interested in wasting their time doing such things as teaching and helping the poor and sick, leaving them little time to do the true work of god such as propagating Papa Ratzi’s message of hate against homosexuality, contraception, and abortion.

But now the nuns may have gone too far. A group of them are on a nine-state bus tour in which they have had the audacity to criticize the budget put forward by the sainted Paul Ryan, the Tea Party’s golden boy congressman and architect of plans to make the rich richer and cut services to the poor.

“People should eat, people should be educated, people should have health care,” said bus rider Sister Mary Ellen Lacey who has worked with the poor in the ghettos of East St. Louis. “We’re the richest country in the world. We don’t have to give tax breaks to the wealthy.”

Many of the nuns’ social service programs depend heavily on federal dollars, which, under a proposed federal budget adopted by the House of Representatives, would largely disappear, they said.

Stephen Colbert interviewed Sister Simone Campbell, one of the leaders of this group of nuns.

(This clip appeared on June 11, 2012. To get suggestions on how to view clips of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report outside the US, please see this earlier post.)

I wonder how long it will be before the nutters start a war on the nuns, calling them freeloaders and even sluts? Because that is what Jesus would do.

    Good morning Mano,

Could this group of socially aware and committed women simply toss their rosaries and bibles in the back of the bus, bite their thumbs in the direction of Rome and go about their good works?

This is the part of religion I wrestle with the most: the social justice actions. Would these women exist, would they be on their journey, if it were not for a faith and a belief in a metaphysics for which there is no evidence?

    Where are the anti-nuns?

Do all you can to make today a good day,

    Jeff

The Catholic Church has for years tried to denegate the women of the church and keep them completely under the thumb of the hierarchy of the Church. The ONLY ONE they could not do this to was Mary. The Nuns built hospitals, cared for the sick and the dying. Cared for orphans, fed the hungry and clothed the naked. They grew with neighborhoods as they cared for the poor and needy. While the Church covered up the scandels of the Pedofiles they continued to promote good works and an intense profession of their faith. It is one of the worst results of Vatican II that they were allowed to give up their traditional habits and were then relagated to the equivalent role of a social worker.
When Christ was on te Cross, where were the Apostles? (Hiding)
Before He was crucified, where were they? (Hiding)
Where were the Women?? Out in plain sight…
After Christ was buried, where were the Apostles??(Hiding)
Who went to the tomb? The women…
