When you lose JC Penney, you have lost the war

JC Penney is an icon of the American middle class. So it’s decision to run a Father’s Day ad featuring a same sex couple playing with their children is noteworthy, especially after their decision to hire Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson and rejecting the demands by the homophobes that she be fired.

Score (another) one for the good guys!

Disclaimer: Not intended to be gender biased in any way, I don’t know a gender neutral way to say the same thing.

I was greatly disappointed in this ad from them. In fact I already sent a letter to their investor relations department this morning regarding my thoughts on this. I am waiting for a response before I sell my stock even though a turned a 20% profit. My guess is that I will receive none & I plan on waiting a week before I call my broker. I sure hope I don’t see it fall dramatically over the next week. If there is fallout due to the add I may sell earlier as I know I can’t be the only one who will not hold ownership in a company that does not uphold the same set of Christian morals as me.

It’s good that you’re willing to put your bigotry ahead of your self-interest. Keep doing that long enough and maybe we won’t have so many bigots to worry about in the future.

  4. bcoppola says

Dan-O: You going to spam every blooger who posts in support of JCP with the identical post as you have here and at Ed’s blog?

  5. Snowshoe the Canuck says

Isn’t profiting from the sale of the stock immoral because you would be profiting from an immoral entity? Wouldn’t it be better for your immortal sole (sic) to give away te stock and thereby not gain from the sin? If you agree, please email me your stockbrokers’s info so I can initiate the transfer process.

  6. Zinc Avenger says

How interesting. Please let us know which companies you hold stock in which do uphold those fine, fine Christian morals.

Don’t worry Dan-o. You and your money won’t be missed. You’re on the losing side of this battle.

I am envious of anyone who manages to live their lives while doing business only with ethical companies. Or is your theory that it’s okay to buy and use goods made by slave labor, so long as you don’t own stock in the company? (I know we don’t share all our values, but I hope that you agree that slavery, murder, armed robbery, and rape are wrong, and have selected a portfolio of companies that do not commit or conceal these crimes.)

  9. dan-o says

@ Vicki, That’s why you pay the big bucks for a broker. He does his digging based on my requirements and I pull the trigger if I believe he is correct on all accounts.

I do not hate homosexuals. I simply do not agree with their life style. You may not agree with the life style of say drivers who speed but my guess is that you do not hate them (unless they caused you harm). You simply would not follow in their foot steps.

I was greatly disappointed in this ad from them.

    Why is that?
The two men are fathers. It’s a Father’s Day advertisement. What’s the issue?

In fact I already sent a letter to their investor relations department this morning regarding my thoughts on this.

You expressed your disappointment that JC Penney supports equality for all, recognizes that same sex families exist and decided to create this ad to show that fathers exist across all walks of life…?So do you support the continued marginalization of same sex relationships?
What reason do you have for this?
Queers who are US citizens have to pay taxes as full Americans yet they’re denied the right to marry. How is that equal treatment of all citizens?

If there is fallout due to the add I may sell earlier as I know I can’t be the only one who will not hold ownership in a company that does not uphold the same set of Christian morals as me.

I’ve heard this touted so many times but only now have I realized that I don’t even know what “Christian morals” are. Would you care to elaborate? I can’t figure out what Christians are supposed to follow since there isn’t one set of rules that are clearly laid out unambiguously.
On top of that, just b/c you choose (or, rather, *think* you’ve chosen) to follow a vague set of rules (rules that were put to paper over the course of the last 2000 years) doesn’t mean that anyone else has to. Your religion is just that. Your religion. You don’t get to impose those beliefs on anyone else. You don’t get to expect anyone else to hold the same beliefs you do.
If you choose to continue to blindly follow the bigoted views found in the Bible (it doesn’t matter if they’re of divine origin…it’s still bigotry) you show others that you don’t embrace equality for all. Perhaps 2012 is the wrong year for you to live in. Perhaps a trip back to 1900 might suit you better.
    Go.
    Hang out.
    Have a beer.
    Don’t come back**.

**I find your bigotry utterly disgusting, un-American, and a relic of times past. Move into the 21st century or move somewhere you can write your own bigoted, discriminatory laws.

Perhaps Dan-O is a supporter of Chik Fil A, Rockstar, or Cracker Barrel. Those companies love their bigotry and it sounds like Dan-O is their targeted audience.

    Dan-O:

I simply do not agree with their life style.

That’s cool. My guess is you don’t have a thing to worry about. I can’t imagine that you’re gay, so relationships other people are in are not your concern.
BTW, what’s the source for your bigotry?
Oh, and you should have already boycotted JC Penney. After all, they sell those fibers you’re not supposed to wear.
I feel the need to inform you as well that being gay is not a ‘lifestyle’. You wouldn’t know of course, since you’re a bigoted homophobe, but I didn’t choose to be gay. When I hit puberty, my hormones went in a different direction than yours. I couldn’t control the feelings I had for my middle school gym coach.
One can have a vegan lifestyle.
The ‘gay lifestyle’ you oppose doesn’t exist.

  12. Physicalist says

I guess it’s time to order some new jeans and shirts. FSM bless JCP for carrying extra tall.

  13. Sassafras says

When you simply “don’t agree with someone’s lifestyle” you don’t go out of your way to punish companies for acknowledging their existence.

  14. Jared A says

Are you saying that you boycott companies that hire people who speed in traffic?

  15. says

I don’t agree with their lifestyle either. I don’t want kids. But dang, I’m not a jerk about it. I just don’t have kids. You’re talking about the kids, right?

Ooh, I like his boat shoes. Are those at JC Penny?

  16. Frank says

    dan-o,

So you admit that you are spamming, rather than actually contributing to a conversation. If that’s all you’re after, I’m OK with it. Props for being honest. You can stop reading now.

But if you really want to bring people over to your viewpoint, why not engage in an actual discussion? If you are at all familiar with Mano’s blog, you know that the commenters here value evidence-based arguments. If you provide an evidence-based argument in opposition to same-sex marriage, I suspect that you would provoke a vibrant discussion--much more than name-calling. And if your argument holds merit, you might win some converts.

I haven’t heard any such arguments, but please, go ahead and prove me wrong. (Repeating “Christian morals” doesn’t cut it, in case you were wondering.)

  17. M Groesbeck says

So basically…you object to companies behaving ethically instead of playing along with your totalitarian fantasy about how the world “should” be. Good to know!

  18. Kilian Hekhuis says

What’s this “life style” thing anyway? Do all gays arange their lives in a similar fashion? I highly doubt it. Given the ad, there’s two guys with their children playing. Do you object to parents playing with their children? I highly doubt that as well. Why do you use “life style” as a synonym for “love each other”?

  19. dan-o says

@5, It shows two people that were not meant to be together. Two people that can not create life. Two people that made a decision to not continue their gene pool. Now you may ask do I hate them. The answer is no. I simply know they will never be able to raise their own flesh & blood. Is this not reason enough to not continue this way of thinking or acting?

  20. Thorne says

It shows two people that were not meant to be together.

It shows two people who seem perfectly happy to be together. By what rationale can you claim that they are not meant to be together?

Two people that made a decision to not continue their gene pool.

And just what evidence do you have to support this statement? How do you know that either of those children is not the natural child of either of those men? How do you know that one or both of those men do not already have children? Methinks you presume too much!

I simply know they will never be able to raise their own flesh & blood. Is this not reason enough to not continue this way of thinking or acting?

There is little in your posts that comes even close to reason! Your only validation for objecting to such things is that YOU think it’s icky, and you therefore you just “know” that your god would also think it’s icky.

Stop worrying about what other people do in the bedroom and start looking at how they treat others. I can guarantee that they have higher moral standards than you or your ilk.

  21. dan-o says

So you think the two men had a baby together? Now you ask me about logic after a statement like that. You have proved nothing other than you like the ad. I have not said I find the ad “icky”. I simply said I do not agree with their choice of lifestyle similar to me saying I do not agree with the swingers lifestyle or drug lifestyle.

  22. Skip White says

My wife and I are unable to ever have a child of our own, due to medical reasons. What would you suggest we do if we ever did want to have a child in our family? Adopt? If so, then I would assume you would say that it would be fine for two men who cannot biologically reproduce to also adopt. If not, then why?

  23. dan-o says

You are trying to compare apples to oranges. I’m a car guy so here is my example: It’s like comparing a Hyundai to a Dodge or a Dodge to a Mercedes. They are in completely different leagues. For further reference I also see a problem with just one parent adopting. I have a cousin & she has never been able to find someone (man for those wondering) so she adopted a child. The child is constantly in daycare due to her job, friends, and times when a child should not be present. Had she waited until she married I believe the child would have far fewer issues plus the child is missing the parenting skills of the second parent. Was the child better off in the orphanage or her house hold? That is a tough call because the child may have been adopted by a family the following month…you just don’t know.

  24. Uncle Glenny says

I don’t hate dan-o; I just disagree with his existence. Therefore I will not support any efforts for him to have a job, housing, education, or any government benefits, in the hope that he will wither, dry up, and blow away.

  25. Uncle Glenny says

I assumed “blooger” was a neologism for “blogger” and “booger.”

  26. Frank says

    dan-o,

Sorry, but you didn’t answer Skip’s question. Please re-read and try again.

Also, apples and oranges? Dodges and Mercedes? We’re talking about two couples, neither of whom can have children. Address the question on its face--no car analogies required.
