A husband’s revenge

Yesterday was Mary’s birthday. I performed the ritual.

“What can I get you?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

“Can I take you out for a nice dinner?”

“No.”

“Can I cook you a nice dinner? Whatever you’d like.”

“There’s some acorn squash we need to use up.”

“That’s it? Just bake some squash?”

“Yes.”

So I obeyed. Nothing special. One squash, baked. Done.

Today is the day after her birthday. The geas is lifted, I can do whatever I want. So tonight I whipped up some Cod Provençal: cod cooked in fresh tomatoes from her garden, onions, garlic, olives, mushrooms, corn, and lots of basil. Don’t tell her it was almost as easy as the squash.

See what happens when you don’t give me good ideas?

It’s really easy. Simmer tomatoes, onions, garlic together until you’ve a nice thick red sauce. Add other ingredients plus big chunks of cod, simmer a little longer (5-10 min) then put the whole concoction into a 400° oven for 10 minutes. It even takes less time than the squash.

    400°C would be impractical…
(Yes I get you mean Fahrenheit. Make it 451° and we can fry some books as well)

Cod Provençal on a guy’s night?!
    Worse, you didn’t invite me?!
Next time, I’ll cook it for all and invite the womenfolk!

Yeah, wouldn’t notice the difference either. ;)

Corn in casserole de morue à la provençale ? Sure, why not… has to be better than courgette (zucchini) which some recipes call for. Strangely — I mean fortunately — I’ve not run across any which call for pois (peas), despite those infesting other somewhat similar dishes.

The mildly deranged penguin points out a very quick method of preparing the squash is to cover it in lots of cheeses. As soon as the cheese melts, done… throw away the squash and enjoy the cheese; she suggests having some lumps of cheese — or bread or so on — on-hand for an impromptu fondue.
