Apres moi le deluge

It’s been dry and miserable all summer here, my lawn is dead, the spiders are panting for a drop to drink, and I arrive at the Minneapolis airport to fly away, and what happens? The skies rip open, thunder and lightning, and everything is drenched. It’s my parting gift to Minnesota, I guess. Don’t worry, I’ll be back on Sunday to resume the desertification.

One thing I should mention on my way out the door is that I’m going to a corner of the US where internet service is spotty. We’re staying at a hotel that assured us they do have wifi, but I’m not sure I believe them, and it’s a little bit of a worry, since I have to teach a class over Zoom every morning. It’s a lesser concern, but if your comment gets hung up in the pending queue, it might be a little while before I can clear it.

Now I have to go get wet, I think. I may step off the plane at Sea-Tac and instantly dessicate the entire Pacific Northwest.

Too late. We’ve been bone dry for most of the year, and we’re still just getting barely enough to turn on the automatic wipers in the car.

You can hardly desiccate the region east of the mountains more than it is right now. It’d be nice if you brought some rain with you.

    Dude. Too soon.

Did you seriously forget the heat wave that already hit the PNW, and desiccated it enough that a town caught fire?

    What happened to Mt. Rainier/Tahoma?

The summer’s historic heat event has left the mountain bare, melting the snow that was insulating the mountain’s glaciers. While some melt off is normal in the summer, June’s heat event melted 30% of Mount Rainier’s snow pack according to the Northwest Avalanche Center. Paradise, which reached highs of 88 degrees, on the mountain’s southern side lost 3 to 4 feet of snow during the heat event.

Yeah, last time I visited the PNW I brought the heat wave. Who knows what I’ll bring this time?

I will accept bribes to stay home.

I think Texas must have stolen Minnesota’s rain. I cannot recall a summer with this much humidity and rainy weather here in Austin. The grass is all still green and we have yet to have a single 100 degree day.

Did you know that ” Apres moi le deluge” is the moto of 617 Squadron RAF ,I know they nicked it off some French bint .

  7. Rob Grigjanis says

davidc1 @9: Yeah, but since they were the Dambusters, their use of it had at least some justification.

  8. davidc1 says

@10 Yeah ,I know that .According to Paul Brickhill ,author of the Dambusters ,after the raid some wags in the RAF sent a spoof letter to The London Times deploring the attack on the Dams ,they wrote that it was the breeding season of a rare bird that nested on the Dams ,and they asked could not the attack have been postponed .
According to Brickhill The Times smelt a rat and didn’t publish the letter .
