A quick announcement of a new YouTube series

Let’s talk about evo-devo!

I’m making an announcement and an invitation. I’m starting a shiny new series here on YouTube in which I’l be discussing some of my favorite science topics in the whole world. That is, I’ll be talking about GOOD SCIENCE, and nothing but good science.

I am by training a developmental biologist, which incorporates a lot of the disciplines I teach here at the University of Minnesota Morris, such as cell biology, genetics, and molecular biology, and in addition I’ve studied evolutionary biology and neuroscience. I’m an interdisciplinary kind of guy! One of the more exciting innovations of the last 40 years is the science of evo-devo, and that’s what I’m going to talk about.

If you’re wondering what evo-devo is, that’s going to be the subject of my first video, which I’m planning to present next week. I’ll be giving a general introduction to the evo-devo for the first few videos, and then we’ll dive into some fun papers. It’ll be great, I promise! Although I also warn you, I’ll be cutting away some of the hype — for instance, I don’t think the value of evo-devo lies so much in newness, as it does in the integration of old sciences into a coherent whole.

I’m calling this series “Evo-Devo Diary” because, first of all, it’s going to be entirely from my personal perspective, and secondly, I want to keep it casual and approachable. I hope you’ll like it and learn something, too.

So I’m just saying, if you want to find out more about evo-devo, this would be a good time to subscribe to this channel, and hey, click that notification bell. I’ve got a whole month and a half between semesters, so I’m hoping I can make this a regular, weekly event for at least a while.

I’ll see you all next week with some cool science!

Yay! I’m really looking forward to this. If possible, please link sources for background reading for people who want to get into it. I’ve really wanted to understand this stuff for a long time, but I’ve just been too depressed to get myself started, so being able to lean on someone who knows what they’re talking about would be awesome. Thanks!

Cool. I think this is a better use of your talents. Not that there’s anything wrong with exposing quacks and fools, but we already knew that and they won’t listen to reason.

Here’s your soundtrack for the diary. :)

(I also recommend its precursor “The Molecular Shape of You,” which will likely pop up in the sidebar)

Your recording is stronger one one channel compared to another. It is barely audible in my left earbud and switching sides results in it being weak on the right side. That this doesn’t fix it for me means it’s not part of my partial deafness. I also started some random videos on YouTube and they all have equal signals on both sides.
