Dr Mona coming to UMM

Hey, gang! Thursday evening at 7pm we have a guest speaker, Dr Mona Hanna-Attisha talking in Edson Auditorium about her work. She’s one of the first people to discover how the water in Flint, Michigan was poisoned with lead (which, by the way, it still is), and she’s going to grace our little college with knowledge that evening. You should come. Why aren’t you coming? Don’t give me that old excuse that it’s far away — you have Google Maps, you can find us.

How about the excuse that it’s in the United States and I can’t think of much that would get me to cross that border?

I live very close to Flint and the Flint river, and I am very frequently in Flint for shopping and other reasons. I want people to know that the community there includes many of the finest and kindest people you can know. I see a spirit of community there that is missing in my own town that is a bit further south. Also, hiking along the now infamous river, what you do see is a lovely, innocent looking river that is teaming with life. Fish, crawdads, dragonflies, and all that. It is a beautiful river.
I just want people to know. This problem does not define Flint or the river. Not sure what that means, but I felt I should write it.

Google Maps couldn’t find driving instructions to get there. Could be something to do with the Pacific Ocean being in the way.

    @marcoli:

Thanks for that endorsement of the community and the river system itself. It’s never bad to be reminded of the complexity and realities of people and places that have only made the news for a single issue.

Unless it’s people chiming in to a discussion on Weinstein’s rape victims to talk about how wonderful one of Weinstein’s movies is. Then it’s terrible. ; )

    Hey congrats.
She has done some outstanding work. Best wishes.

Other than Tabby’s point and the fact that the inter-temporal matter transmitter is not working I would love to be there.

RCMP are in hot pursuit since you know the name of the photo-shopper who makes Jason Kenny look thin?

    @ marcoli

Thanks for humanising Flint. You just completely changed my mental image of the place

…I can’t very well arrange for an affordable ocean crossing on this timescale, you know…

Google Maps says anything from ‘Sorry, we could not calculate directions from “Home (redacted)” to “University of Minnesota, Morris”‘ to ‘Sorry, your search appears to be outside our current coverage area for flights.’

Then again, that border crossing was a repellent long before the current child moved into the white building.

I thought of that as soon as I+
had sent the post. Do you need a visa or is that only for entering Alberta from BC?

    We effete Easterners keep forgetting.
