That settles what I’m doing tonight

My wife reminded me that tonight is the Democratic debate. I noted that tonight is also the premiere of the Birds of Prey. I had to think for a moment: crappy super hero movie that I’ll probably dislike, vs. the best show the Democrats have to offer?

Yeah, I’m going to the movies.

I trust my wife to fill me in on any substance offered in the debate. I think both choices are going to be fluff.

I get the feeling PZ might have gone to the movies a little while ago and been disappointed that “Into The Spider-Verse” wasn’t so literal.

    @1, what absolute nonsense!
Birds of prey are what proper spiders eat. So, it’s a film about spider food.

Why not stay home and read? Perhaps Valley of Spiders by H. G. Wells.
Available online either print or audio.

@3 They already impeached him. What would you have them do?
    1. Maybe they should impeach him repeatedly. Or is that fumbling too?
    2. Maybe they should pass more bills that will be buried in the Senate? Or is that fumbling too?
    3. Maybe they should investigate the rest of the long list of his corruptions. Or is that fumbling too?
    4. Maybe they should give daily Philippics from the floor of the House. Or is that fumbling too?
    5. Maybe they should use the congressional power of arrest and confine trump* to the basement of the Capitol.
Actually. I’m in favor of all 5.
    Have I missed anything?

@3 and @6. As long as Democrats aren’t actively trying to destroy our democracy, obliterate our middle class, pollute our environment, marginalize minorities, return women to a state of domestic enslavement, or engage in the wholesale murder of the most desperate of refugees, I guess they’re OK in my book.
Sometimes you just have to use the tools you have.

I might try to catch a matinee of this on Sunday. Gail Simone did a few volumes of the Birds of Prey title that I really liked, so hopefully the movie takes some influence from her work.

lochaber, you’re on the internet, so hope is not needful.

(A couple of clicks easily found Gail Simone’s Twitter thread about the movie)

I’ve heard relatively good things about Birds of Prey- among other things the film relies a lot less on CGI than most action films do these days and instead swung heavily toward practical effects. Also, the actresses did most of their own stunts.

It was a mostly OK movie, the actors were good, it was fast-paced. It takes most of its sensibilities from Batman.

    The 1960s Batman.

Lots of slapstick violence, with rather more gore than would have been permitted in the 1960s,

I had heard that it was a mixed bag, but more positive than negative and the worst parts of the movie in the middle rather than beginning or end. Obviously you’d like the whole movie to be good, but if you were going to plan where the worst parts of your movie would be, the middle is probably the best place for them. It allows you to get drawn in initially and to end on a high note. So despite being DC, I’m sure I’ll see this eventually.
