Every day is International Men’s Day

But today, 19 November 2019, is the day with the label. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do today, since I’m already stuffed so full of manliness that it’s oozing out of my ears*, but I do know one thing not to do: don’t search for “manly” with safe search turned off.

*Near as I can tell, manliness is the expression of hair in strange places.

I just did that. First search result: “Manly, New South Wales – Wikipedia.” Google image search for “manly” gave me lots of photos of what appears to be a beautiful beach.

Great. Let’s us menfolk celebrate our manliness by treating women and each other decently.

Here, let’s not get carried away. Check the Hong Kong dollar. You should be able to get HK$ for bit less than CDN$17 and the note or notes will have novelty value in Morris.

In a pinch, see if you have CT$100 lying around

(CT = Canadian Tire for non_Canadian readers)

Well, you can try to help the men who are victims of domestic violence, but won’t seek help out of fear of ridicule or being accused of being the actual abuser (which is what the MRAs are more than happy to tell them). You can help men who won’t seek treatment for mental illness out of fear of being viewed as “weak” and end up committing suicide rather than ask for help (or even worse, try to take a bunch of people with them). You can make sure the students in your classrooms with testicles know that they are in a high risk group for testicular cancer so they should check themselves (also that men can get breast cancer, which while rare, is more fatal for men due to the fact that most men don’t even consider it a possibility until it’s too late). Of course, there are also the problems faced by gay and/or trans men who tend to get lost in the shuffle in these sorts of conversations. Also, you might also stop defining masculinity the “expression of hair in strange places” as many men are not particularly hairy and women face great societal pressure to be completely hairless below the eyebrows in order to be viewed as appropriately feminine.

British comedian Richard Herring, who spends all day on Twitter on International Womens Day telling anyone who asks when international mens day is, has a just giving page for a male suicide prevention charity today. He raised about £150,000 for a domestic violence charity on international womens day this year. This is a bit more modest.

He has also been tweeting some of the people who asked when international mens day was to let them know it is today.
