We can all stop worrying about climate change now

Thanks for the reality check, Steve Milloy!

All we need to do now is learn how to live with temperatures of 465°C (870°F for the benighted among us) –we’ll need to use some kind of refrigerator for baking, since that’s a little on the high side. I suppose we could breathe CO2 if we completely changed our biochemistry and metabolism. I guess while we’re doing that, we could also learn to stand unharmed in concentrated sulfuric acid at 90 atmospheres of pressure. Small changes. You know, nothing like the unbelievable stuff the Warmists are proposing, like meters of sea level rise.

This is Milloy’s bio.

Co-founder http://BurnMoreCoal.com . Trump EPA transition team. Eagle Scout. Biostatistician. Lawyer. Author. FOX News contributor.

I think the new Trumpster slogan ought to be “Turn Earth into another Venus”, since there are nothing but good associations with the goddess of love.

How can you not want to live there?

Technically, the Earth will be just fine without us. For some strange reason I have a strong preference for the survival of humanity, though recently my doubts have been growing.

  2. microraptor says

Perhaps Mr Milloy would care to try inhaling a nice lungful of gasses blended to mimic Venus’s atmospheric composition?

  3. weylguy says

I am reminded of those Bush 43-era ads extolling the virtues of increased oil drilling and endless fossil fuel use, including the deathless phrase They (godless lefties) say it’s a pollutant. We call it life, followed by a shot of a baby taking deep, sweet breaths of air mixed with life-giving carbon dioxide.

Just another example of scientific illiteracy run amok.

  4. unclefrogy says

I find it extremely hard to believe that some people who have had an education and acquired some degree of power and influence can be that stupid.

There are some old command modules from various Apollo missions hanging around in museums. We could seal mr. Milloy with a couple of companions in one, with a dodgy carbon dioxide scrubber and see how long they last.
Real, reproducible experimental science of the kind creationists and other science denying folk are forever telling us they support.
It could be advertised as the Apollo 13 experience. OK I know they used a LEM, but close enough.
Do you reckon there will be any difficulties getting it past an IRB?

  6. slithey tove (twas brillig (stevem)) says

DeFazio, please show us how nicely fragrant a 96.5% CO2 atmosphere is, spend the night and lets us know when you wake up dead.

  7. slithey tove (twas brillig (stevem)) says

    continuing @7:

Also, DeFazio, show us how comfortable it is on a sea of molten lead from the ambient temperature. Sail a boat over molten lead and let us know how pleasant that was.

sarcasm aside. DeFazio is fokking around with the phrase “the planet will come to an end”.
Looks like he wants to make clear it is a metaphor for [human civilization on this planet].
Which is the only way I can imagine for him to justify that obviously stupid ASSertion.

Well, he sure put all of us who have been claiming global warming will cause the planet to break apart into pieces in our place.

    I’ve always like this quote.

To those who snort that 340 ppm of anything must surely be of no consequence, I recommend 340 ppm of arsenic in their coffee. — Craig Bohren. Clouds in a Glass of Beer

  10. nomdeplume says

Seems we are living at a time when most of the stupidest people who have ever existed are also living. Interesting times.

  11. woozy says

I’ve read some of his other posts now.

This is “the oponenents say X, aren’t they ridiculously overblown” tactic to discredit other viewpoints. “DeFazio says global warming is an ‘existential threat to the planet’. Climate change bedwetters think the planet is going to end if we don’t do something.”

This is basically the same thing as “Look, a terrorist ran pedestrians down in London. But, hey, I thought the SJW all believe that all muslims are peace loving and better human beings than anyone else. I thought only right wing christian americans are capable of killing people for ideology. Oh well. I guess nothing happened….”

So …. “existential threat to the planet” = “earth will evaporate into plasmic mist if CO levels get above 0.041%” ERGO environmentalists shouldn’t be listened to.

  12. bachfiend says

Well, actually if we burn all known reserves of fossil fuels, we won’t get to Venusian conditions.

It has been estimated that the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum 55 mya due to a natural release of greenhouse gases of similar magnitude (but over 25000 years instead of the current centuries) led to 7 degrees Celsius of warming and its own minor mass extinction.

But you don’t want to live through a mass extinction. Your species might survive, just, but you mightn’t. Nor would you enjoy the experience.

  13. says

Ah yes. The old trick of taking literally (“the planet”) something that was clearly meant figuratively (“human life on the planet”). (Would that be ignoring the synecdoche?)

  14. unclefrogy says

    @16
the side effect of advances in medicine and industrial agriculture. They allow far more people to survive to adulthood regardless of their intelligence. That stupid people have some degree of cleverness in self-interest is somewhat unexpected.

Steve Milloy is way too modest. He left out his work on behalf of Big Tobacco questioning the link between cigarettes and cancer, as a fossil fuel shill…

He’s been very well remunerated for his service to his corporate masters–this kind of stupidity doesn’t come cheap.

  16. robert79 says

Nobody is worrying about the end of the planet… it’s the end of that tiny bit scurrying about on its surface that bothers us.

Even then I’d doubt that global warming would mean the end of life, that has a nasty habit of persisting. Humanity? That might persist, who knows… but not as we know it!
    – We might only lose a few coastal cities but remain otherwise roughly the same.
    – We might survive fairly intact, but with all national borders, or even the concept of nations destroyed by massive refugee flows.
    – We might survive heavily decimated but with our culture and technology fairly intact,
    – We might get knocked back to the stone age, survive but have to start all over again,
    – We might get knocked back to the stone age and evolve into something that eats cockroaches (I’m fairly sure they will survive!)
    – We might not make it at all.
in none of these scenarios does the Earth magically disappear in a puff of smoke.

Here, and elsewhere, people are misunderstanding who the idiot is. Yes, the tweet is a bit confusing, regarding who said what.
    Milloy is the idiot.
DeFazio is a darned good Congressman.

  18. andyo says

Huh, so Milloy has popped up again. Many people on Twitter are first hearing about this dummy but I’m sure many here remember he’s one of the OG deniers.

I’m not surprised he’s a Trumpster fire now, but he’s been beating this drum since before Trumpesters, or even before Trump had a TV show. I remember back in the oooooolddd days when “skepticism” was still a clean word (oh how innocent we were), one would google something related to it, and junkscience.com would frequently come up, and some people would actually confuse it for actual skepticism.

  19. wzrd1 says

I’m reminded of the testimony that “CO2 is plant food”.
I’d love nothing more than to see that individual (and now this one) sitting in a chamber with 20% CO2, the rest being the usual O2 & N2 mixture, with a potted plant for company.
I’d pull them out – after a loss of consciousness. Right after I rescued the poor plant.

  20. Callinectes says

For additional context, a CO2 content of 1% is fatal to humans and most non-burrowing animals.

  21. John Morales says

Callinectes, your source? Because I think you’re exaggerating, and it lessens your point.

“In concentrations up to 1% (10,000 ppm), it will make some people feel drowsy and give the lungs a stuffy feeling.[115] Concentrations of 7% to 10% (70,000 to 100,000 ppm) may cause suffocation, even in the presence of sufficient oxygen, manifesting as dizziness, headache, visual and hearing dysfunction, and unconsciousness within a few minutes to an hour.[117]”

  22. microraptor says

Milloy is just bitter that his friend Art Robinson once again lost to DeFazio in November’s election.

  23. jimzy says

Even though Earth is further from the Sun than Venus, Earth’s atmosphere with a lot of water vapor would retain heat better. Estimates suggest 900 °C (1,650 °F) temperature. 900 °C would melt aluminium and then some.

  24. komarov says

Meanwhile the Martians clearly succumbed to rampant environmentalism, taking out so much CO2 that their planet is now barren, cold and entirley without a Martian civilisation. They took it so far that it’s become difficult to put CO2 back into the atmosphere; it tends to snow out at the poles.

But I suppose the planet’s still there so all is well that ends well.

No AI Singularity on Venus, folks. Just sayin’.

I bet the Venusian natives are all living in the (sulphuric acid) cloud. Instead of having to upload everything it just dissolves on contact, simplifying the transition enormously. I’m sure they’re all Fine.

  25. A momentary lapse... says

Even though Earth is further from the Sun than Venus, Earth’s atmosphere with a lot of water vapor would retain heat better.

Yeah, the surface temperature of Venus would probably have been a lot worse when it was actually undergoing the runaway greenhouse, before all the water got photodissociated and the hydrogen escaped. And that’s without considering whether or not it had the extremely reflective 100% cloud coverage back then – after taking account of the light getting reflected directly back out into space, Venus runs its climate on far less solar energy input than Earth’s.

Venus: it may be a hell world, but it’s an energy-efficient hell world!
