Instead of stock photos of people in lab coats, how about a little science evangelism aimed at our conservative friends? Maybe, pictures of all the chemistry and physics that goes into top fuel hot rods? Photographs of all the geology that goes into oil exploration? Introductory slides of the solid state physics that allows them to read their crazy right-wing websites everyday?

I believe the evidence that supports scientific fact, and I can’t ignore it enough to have any faith in any man invented religious bullshit. There’s a huge different between belief in reality and faith in untestable sky daddies.

    @ DonDueed:

Funny thing, just a couple weeks ago I found myself with a deep craving for Lovin Spoonful, and realized that almost all my “summer music” is on vinyl, and I’m not able to get a turntable hooked up right now. I kind of went crazy buying mp3s, got a ton of Lovin Spoonful. John Sebastian is a damn fine songwriter, isn’t he? (also got my fave Stevie Wonder album, Innervisions, and a bunch of Bert Jansch [good anytime])

psanity@4: Way way back in high school, when I played guitar, I wrote the one and only song I ever attempted. I played it for my buddy, who was surprised it was original. He thought it was a Lovin’ Spoonful song he hadn’t heard before. (Sadly, I haven’t kept up with playing music.)

I think my favorite Spoonful song is “Six O’Clock”, which rocks pretty hard but has a very bittersweet lyric.

I agree with Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who said

The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it.

as my argument for not believing in science. I trust it, since it works reliably.
I prefer to use belief for things with little hard evidence, science has lots of supporting evidence, so there.

If you liked that, I highly recommend acapellascience‘s channel on YouTube. One guy, singing all the parts and instruments, absolutely stunning harmonies, and as far as I can tell, good science, though most of it’s way over my head.

    My favorites:
    Evo-Devo (Despacito Biology Parody)

    Bohemian Gravity!

Eminemium (Choose Yourself) This one’s less science and more manifesto about what we do with science. It’s aptly titled.

Entropic Time (Backwards Billy Joel Parody) The song isn’t super awesome (the original never captured me either), but the backwards action is kind of jaw-dropping. The “making of” video for this one is fascinating.

But all of them are awesome. (you might find it helpful to turn on captions, because the lyrics tend to zip by)

As a side note, Steven Brust is way up at the top of my list of best fantasy writers working today. Pretty much anything by him is worth reading, but the Khaavren Romances are — well, start with a take-off on The Three Musketeers and go on from there. (In fact, I finally read the Musketeers after reading Brust’s The Phoenix Guards.)

Why this futile attempt to redefine what words mean? “Believe” is an ordinary English word, which identifies a state of mind or behavioural disposition, and applies equally to things with no evidence, things with lots of evidence, and for that matter, necessary truths. For example, I believe 17 is a prime number.
