Iowans with better food

Rob Tibbetts, father of a young woman who was murdered by a criminal man, spoke out on his appreciation of the Hispanic community.

Speaking Sunday afternoon to more than 1,000 people at a ceremony at his daughter’s former high school, Rob Tibbetts didn’t directly respond to comments by President Donald Trump and others who quickly seized upon the suspect’s citizenship to argue for changes in immigration laws. Rob Tibbetts has not publicly commented on the issue. But in his eulogy, he highlighted how the local Hispanic community had embraced him as he searched for his daughter in recent weeks. While in Iowa for nearly six weeks, Hotel Grinnell put him up for free. During that time, he said he ate at a number of Mexican restaurants, where employees were sensitive and kind. They knew when he needed space or when he needed to joke, he said.

“The Hispanic community are Iowans. They have the same values as Iowans,” he said, including an emphasis on family. “As far as I’m concerned, they’re Iowans with better food.”

Exactly. As the Hispanic community here in Minnesota has grown, we’ve also seen more and more tasty food, so I’m not complaining.

Meanwhile, over in Wingnuttia…

Who is the better human being, Rob Tibbetts or Tomi Lahren?

Trick question. Tomi Lahren is soft white cotton bag filled with cockroaches.

Well, I’d vote for the guy with the beard. Still the key issue is FOOD. Lahren seems oblivious to the fact that limiting immigration limits food choices.

Well, she seems oblivious to any facts but that is another matter—a racist idiot is a racist idiot.

Without immigration in the last 100 or so years Canada would not have pirogi, cabbage rolls, dim sum, raman noodles (I may be a bit off on dates here), shwarma, maybe even pizza?

And this racist idiot wants to limit immigration.

Syrian cuisine is apparently outstanding. We need more Syrians who are willing to cook.

I am sure lutefish is lovely in Minnesota but I live in Ontario. We demand good food.

And yet a white guy killed two people and injured nine in a e-sport competition, and I don’t hear a peep about dangerous white guys.

Same thing here in No VA. Amazing food from all the South Asian and especially Salvadoran immigrants. Plus this area has been crowded and crazy for a long time.

    Salvadoran ?
The only Salvadoran place here (by owner, anyway) seems to serve Mexican/Indian (subcontinental) foods. Complicated story but the food is good.

As I see it, each ethnic group, as they arrive, contribute to the cuisine of the country. Unfortunately my Irish family arrived in the 1830’s and contributed boiled potatoes and overcooked beef. Not that I have anything against boiled potatoes.

Murdoch exploiting a tragedy for political and financial ends!? No! Couldn’t happen…again. He had to shut down News of the World…and apologize even!…because his crew was caught hacking phones and buying info from cops. This included hacking the phone of a missing 13 year old, later found murdered, deleting messages (possible evidence), and a host of other atrocities. To sell eyeballs. So far, the investigation has lead to 90 people being arrested, 16 charged, and some convictions and guilty pleas. Sounds like yet another criminal operations by rich white guys.

The lack of those foods in Canada wouldn’t have made any difference to me since, without immigration in the last hundred or so years, I would never have grown up there. :-P

(But really, I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up in and spent so much of my life in Canada. I love the country, even though I don’t live there now.)

Personally, I think most of the Mexican food in Iowa (at least this side of the state) is garbage, but I was spoiled by living an hour and change from the border a while back.

It’s been kinda surreal watching the right wingers flog this murder, I’d become accustomed to politicians ignoring Iowa except for that brief period every four years when we suddenly become Super Important.

About 20 summers ago I taught a masters level intro to linguistics class to a group of ESL teachers in South Sioux City, Nebraska (just across the river from Iowa). They had a large and growing Mexican population there, mostly attracted by the meat-packing plants. Had some excellent Mexican food there–the real stuff, not the Tex-Mex stuff that passes in most of the country.

If these clowns ever divert their attention to the esports shooting it would be to point out that the shooter had a history of mental illness. Because scapegoat is the default disposition for these assholes.
