Uh-oh, we have competition

I told you that the University of Minnesota Morris has an opening for a tenure track position in quantitative biology — really, we do, and we urge qualified individuals to apply.

Only now it turns out that we have some competition in the market. Liberty University is also trying to fill an assistant professor in biology position.

Disclaimer: Liberty University’s hiring practices and EEO Statement are fully in compliance with both federal and state law. Federal law creates an exception to the “religion” component of the employment discrimination laws for religious organizations (including educational institutions), and permits them to give employment preference to members of their own religion. Liberty University is in that category.

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in a biological field, or an M.D. minimum qualifications or 18 graduate hours in biology related coursework. Candidates must be committed to the evangelical standards and mission of Liberty University.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in a biological field, or an M.D. minimum qualifications or 18 graduate hours in biology related coursework. Candidates must be committed to the evangelical standards and mission of Liberty University.

I might be wrong, but I think there might be some religious requirement for the job at Liberty. You might want to read it carefully, I could have missed it.

In the spirit of true academic collegiality, though, if you meet the requirements for the Liberty position, I urge you to apply there. Not to UMM. We’re secular, super gay, and satanic. We might be drawing on a different pool of applicants.

Does having identical Minimum and Preferred Qualifications mean one is scrapping the bottom of the barrel?

Barrel-bottom still is a rather high bar for Liberty University.

18 graduate hours in biology related coursework

Isn’t that just one semester or so? That’s a touch different than a PhD

I only need 1 1/2 classes and I could teach at Liberty if I faked the religion thingy. I have spent to much time in Lynchburg. That is the one city in Virginia I could never live in even if it did not have Liberty.

Yeah, 18 hours is a bit low — it might mean they’re willing to accept someone with a Masters, as long as they belonged to the right sect.

I apparently need a “Pastoral Reference Letter” to apply. Do you think that the one from Pope Francis will do? If so, should I get it translated or just assume everyone there will read Spanish?

    What is an “Unofficial Transcript”?

  6. Larry says

Don’t forget the pastoral reference, Liberty candidates. They need proof that you’re super-jesusy. Your word alone won’t cut it and just uttering “praise Jesus” during your interviews won’t sway anyone.

  7. blf says

Notice all supporting documents — including résumé, cover letter, the pastoral reference letter, &tc — are “Optional”. There are no “Required” documents.

Apparently, just waving my hands about and going “woo woo woo…” is about all that’s required to apply.

An unofficial transcript is the version you can print out yourself. You have to pay for the official version and it comes sealed and everything. Unofficial is sufficient for most purposes; the only time I needed an official transcript was when sending my associate degree transcript to the University to enroll for my bachelor’s.

    @11 jrkrideau

Nice, but did you get it on official letterhead?

I’ve got it on video. Does that count?

I’ve got it on video. Does that count?

Only if sealed with brimstone and fire.
However, USPS will probably not accept the package for delivery. Try the Hells Angels.

Can’t one simply apply with “God told me in my dream last night. (That Is a pretty good recommendation)”
Love to see their response to that. Hmmm send me the address, I have a “cunning plan” ( like Baldrick, *swirling palms*)

“We might be drawing on a different pool of applicants.”

    UMM: qualified candidate pool.

Liberty: Christian Evangelical ScholarS Pool … abbreviated as CESSpool.

Why does Morris, or any university, need a teacher with a fancy degree? MN now allows K-12 schools to employ teachers as “Tier 1” – no 4 year degree- and “Tier 2” – any subject 4 year degree. In fact, under this program, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (BBE) schools, down the road a ways from Morris, has hired a science teacher whose only credentials are being a chiropractor.

This is off topic (not that much is on topic for this thread) but when I read “super gay” I imagine a caped and masked super hero a la Doctor Mysterio from last year’s Who Christmas special who leaves a rainbow trail everywhere he flies (yes, my imagination makes the thought appear male). It’s a little odd, but not off-putting or anything.

  15. johnlee says

Perhaps a little off topic, but: I run a language school in Barcelona, in Spain. I was asked by an American college for a reference for a former employee of ours a while ago, and the questions in the reference form were standard, until one which asked about her commitment to Christian Morality. I’m still unsure what they meant with this question. What kind of Christian Morality did they mean? Did she love her neighbour? Did she hate gays? Did she go to Church on Sundays? Did she beat religion into her students like Irish nuns? I fudged it by saying that under Spanish law, answering a question about religious beliefs would be unlawful, and left it at that. Apart from being a nasty question to ask, how can you answer it truthfully?

  16. rietpluim says

Truthfully? There is no Christian Morality. Christianity and morality are mutually exclusive.

  17. blf says

Whilst I think the “fudged” answer is quite good & appropriate, I must admit I’d be tempted to answer something like “I do not know if she was raped by her priest or not — why the feck do you care?” However, that would probably not be helpful answer for the individual, so back to the fudge.
