    I’m not crying,YOU’RE crying…

The Small Fry turned ten a few weeks ago. I never say no to piggyback despite my dodgy knee ’cause soon, all too soon, that little bit of daddy fun will end. It’s just a matter of whether mass or a desire to be more grown up ends it first.

Hell it was just yesterday when she was beaming up at me with all the wattage a three and a half year old smile can generate. Oh so proud of herself for tying her dressing gown with a perfect bow. And me, standing there flapping my unneeded hands, truly understanding that this was just the first in a long line of such redundancies.

A remarkable feeling that: such a proud sense of loss.

I’m still not used to it, and I’m not sure I ever want to be.

My daughter’s fifth birthday was this weekend, and she started Kindergarten last week, and I’ve been going through a whole bunch of these feelings. That my son is only a couple of months old and seeing how fast that change is happening along side all of it is making my mind spin a bit.

That being said, I don’t want to live in a future where people are still using Skype…

Not enough shit and piss to be accurate. Or screaming. Overly romanticized father-daughter fantasies like this always feel a bit icky. I mean yeah: aspire to similar things (I’m panel 7), but definitely was more worried about the present back in the day.

    drksky, @8:

I find babies creepy, weird and gross and want nothing to do with them.

I find them more insufferable and life-crippling than creepy, but agreed: I will never have a baby in my future and I’m very happy about it.

We’ve been through this with five kids. The most shocking thing to me is that our oldest grandson just graduated from high school and turned 18 this June. (And I’m a few months younger than PZ!)
The day that I sat in the passenger seat of a van and watched my grandson confidently drive it on the highway with his mother, scared grandmother and two baby sisters as passengers definitely gave me that odd feeling of pride and loss. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was driving around with him in a car seat in my car!
One of these days I’m going to be at panel 14 again, but the baby will be a great-grandchild – yikes!

I recently discovered the reason for the existence of the aphorism “grandparenting has all the fun of parenting, with none of the responsibility”.
Used to think it was satire (or sarcasm).
Now, as a recent grandfather, found agreement with it as actual factual description of being a grandparent. wheeee

We would have to jump through some serious hoops to have kids, but that doesn’t much cool the longing. Nor does hearing from certain parents about how much they regret having children. (Though that does leave me concerned about what kind of resentment their kids are being exposed to.) I’m pretty fond of the little beasties in my extended family and can only hope someday my heart is bittersweetly broken by the passing of time like in that comic.

And right in the feels. (And that after lunarbaboon’s “ Stay” comic of last week… Got a serious case of dust contamination here).
I guess my only real regret in life will be that the chance of me being a father nears zero as I’m single and well into my forties.
Oh well… at least I get to be “cool (or sweet) uncle” of 8 super great nieces and nephews.
