A lovely own goal

The man with a reputation as Dumbest Man on the Internet, Jim Hoft, has a blog called Gateway Pundit.

The Gateway Pundit blog has press credentials at the White House, and Hoft might have a rival: his “journalist” representative is Lucian Wintrich. Wintrich posted this:

They break into our country, steal resources, then do shit like this. And libs still wonder why we are pushing for immigration controls…

You know, those brown people he’s berating look like Indians to me…native Americans. Making that caption incredibly ironic.

That tweet almost looks like it refers to white people as “they”, where “shit like this” is blowing a mountain into the shape of their leaders faces. It’s almost impressive in how much of an own goal that is.

  2. Johnny Vector says

The remaining members of Firesign Theatre are wishing they could come up with irony that pure.

  3. Siobhan says

And libs still wonder why we are pushing for immigration controls…

I’m going to go on a limb and assume the First Nations would’ve been better off had white people not “immigrated.”

  4. Saad says

The one thing I appreciate about white supremacists is how consistently clueless they are.

When I was young my parents took us on a long trip out West and we visited Mt Rushmore. I am embarrassed to say it now but then I thought it was one of the coolest things on the trip. But now, I am embarrassed that it exists.

So, what is the proper response to Mt. Rushmore? Do we blow it up? Or would that simply damage the land even more? Do we fully fund the Crazy Horse monument? Other?
At the very least we should relate the history of how white folks took the land in the interpretation center as Howard provides in #8.

I looked up this Tweet. As you can imagine some people pointed out Wintrich is an idiot. Some idiots responded to those responses, like the fool who thinks what happened to Native Americans is all right because they lost the “war.” .

Well, the Crazy Horse monument might be a good idea. Take the money that would be given to the Mount Rushmore monument and make that happen. I originally thought it wasn’t supported by the First Nations (I’m not sure if that’s the right nomenclature; I hope it is) since it was being done by the same person as Mount Rushmore. I found out today that Standing Bear and the Lakota people as a whole supported the project.
We should probably shutter at least some of the Mount Rushmore stuff, and replace the rest with information about the real peoples who lived on that land, how the US government got their hands on it, and what was done as reparations. Since no reparations have been made, that part is probably problematic.

Seriously does look like the subject of the tweet is the monument “…and they do shit like THIS”
Plus the “steal our resources” etc. Maybe I’ve fallen into his trap, I’m convinced he is berating the White Colonists who inundated this country.
The disagreement is using that to justify refusing current immigrations by refugees.
    That is the rhetorical Trap.

I know how to “fix” Mount Rushmore.
    Add more portraits:
    Cotton Mather, Benedict Arnold,
Herbert Hoover, that Nazi who was the leader of the German- American Bund 1941. …

  10. mnb0 says

Nah, I’d say keep it as it is and build a wall in front of it where all Indians can put photos like this one.

Is this possibly a Photoshop job? The woman on the right seems too close to the man behind her. Also, her arm is so close to the woman in the middle’s head, that it appears to be pushing up her hair…or there’s a strange black shadow. Although I could find four postings of this picture they were all at right-wing, white supremacist sites (Vox Day has it up). They are all deploring “immigrants”…how do they know these are immigrants? In any case, I can’t find any other version of it.

  12. DanDare says

The appropriate response might be to add some significant native people’s likenesses after consulting who they think should go up there

  13. Chris Capoccia says

at least south dakota renamed it’s highest peak to black elk instead of after a war criminal

That crag looked so much better in its original natural state before its defacing.
More irony: most people who complain furiously about yahoos knocking over hoodoos or spray-painting graffiti on formations never give this colossal eyesore a second thought.
Almost makes a body want to jump off a pretty mountain cliff somewhere…

  15. emergence says

    @robro
Yeah, I noticed the further racism there; the right wing assholes think that the brown-skinned people in the photo are Hispanic, so they assume that they must be immigrants. Also notice how the asshole who tweeted this didn’t specifically say undocumented immigrants. Right wingers have apparently fully dropped the pretense that they only hate undocumented immigrants. Now, they’re prefectly fine with saying that they don’t want anyone who isn’t white to move to this country.

Demand the treaties be honored. Advocate for the return of the land. Unless you’re Lakota, there’s not a blessed other thing for you to do to “fix” it.

  17. robnyny says

Weird, isn’t it, that they feel the same way about them that some people feel about traitors in defense of slavery?

  18. coldthinker says

Speaking as an outsider, I think you Americans should absolutely not blow up the Mount Rushmore, even though it’s a horrible fascist monument. It would be rewriting history, which is just as fascist as creating such leadership cults in the first place. In Russia they destroyed most of the old Lenin and Stalin statues, thus denying the uglier side of their past. I do understand the sentiment behind the Iraqis bringing down the huge Saddam statues, but even they should accept that they once had this cruel dictator in their millennia-long history. Mount Rushmore should remain as a reminder that like the Russians, the Americans still have a jingoist yearning for an authoritarian strongman leadership instead of being a fair democracy for its people.

  19. coldthinker says

Sorry, obviously I didn’t mean all Americans. But let’s say there is such a desire for authoritarianism in the US society, living frighteningly strong in the minds of tens of millions of Americans.

  20. madtom1999 says

#22 coldthinker – would you like to live with statues of people like Lenin, Stalin and Saddam? Tearing that shit down is not ‘denying your past’ its getting rid of someone else’s shit that’s getting in the way of the people of today enjoying their lives.
Mount Rushmore can fuck off too. One man’s reminder is another man’s altar,

  21. Timberwoof says

Why was it wrong for the Taliban to blow up big statues of Buddha while it is right for others to blow up big statues of past American presidents? Who decides? How far must we go to remove all traces of European colonialism in North America?
I much prefer the approach of honesty in the information center, and, as The Mellow Monkey suggests, return the land to the Lakota.

  22. nich says

I thought the tweet was supposed to be a satirical critique of Trumpism for a quick second! Talk about an own goal!

  23. Greta Samsa says

    Timberwoof, #26
The differences are two: first, the Taliban are blowing up statues of Buddha to incite fear in and oppress others, while the government would be destroying an oppressive imperialistic idol, second, if the territory was returned to the Lakota (as it ought) and they removed the sculptures, they would have the right to do so as the owners, while the Taliban typically destroy things belonging to other people.
