Mary’s Monday Metazoan: You’re not afraid of snakes, are you?

Because if you are, you might not want to watch this video of Bryan Fry collecting sea snakes. There’s one scene where he’s got a fist full of multiple venomous snakes all writhing about that might give you the heebie-jeebies.

I am really fond of snakes. Here in the desert SW, they do a good job of controlling the pests that I really don’t like.

Oooo. Thanks for that link slatham! My pet snakes ate slowly getting moved into their fancy new housing and I’m still waiting for my few eggs to hatch. <3 all snakes, but prefer ones I can safely snuggle.

Well I am not exactly fond of snakes but what really gets me is pictures of snakes. They really creep me out. I spent a good amount of time when watching the Raiders of the Lost Ark clutching my girlfriend’s hand and saying, “Can I open my eyes yet?”.

BTW I did not view of video.

I’m getting “currently unavailable” (probably due to too many viewers) so I don’t know where the video takes place. Taiwan has a large number of sea snakes, mostly around Green Island. I’ve seen more cobras, kraits and pythons in eleven years here than I care to remember.

Whatever you do, don’t watch video of garter snake pits in Canada. But at least garter snakes are mostly harmless.

The Diving for Sea Snakes video gave me the heebie-jeebies all right.

Bryan Fry directs the Venom Evolution Laboratory at the University of Queensland. ABC reported on a podcast that he puts venom to good use by working to create drugs to treat blood pressure, cancer, diabetes and pain.
