Convergent evolution of jerks

This sounds terribly familiar.

The self-identified Men’s Rights Advocates just seemed eager to lay into someone they perceived as a liberal “value-signaler.” They targeted my masculinity and sexual orientation, labeling me a “cuck” and a “libfag.” Before I knew it, I was receiving multiple email notices that I’d been signed up for a variety of hardcore gay pornography services.

What did Jared Sexton do to deserve such hatred? He wrote up a factual account of his attendance at a Trump rally, and noted that a lot of the attendees were loud bigots.

It’s a curious phenomenon. I got exactly the same kind of response from Catholics, years ago, and then I got it from right-wing atheists, and then from “scientific” racists and fans of evolutionary psychology, and of course I get it from MRAs. What’s strange is how they all sound alike, and the tactics haven’t changed at all. Email death threats, rage with a common set of slurs, and oh yes, signing me up for gay porn. Do they even realize that that stuff doesn’t disturb me in the least? I might glance at it, be impressed with the remarkable muscle tone of their models, and trash it for lack of interest.

They occasionally come up with a new term, but it sweeps through the population so rapidly that it loses all impact. The latest example is “cuck”: one moment, no one is saying it, and then suddenly it’s ubiquitous among that certain group of people. For the record, I love the word “cuck”, because when someone uses it, it is an instant classifier. It’s like spotting a notochord in an embryo — you just snap your fingers and say, yep, phylum Chordata. I see “cuck”, I know instantly that it’s phylum Blustering-Asshole-Authoritarian-Obsessed-With-Controlling-Women.

But really, what’s sad is how uniform they all sound — like their personality has been excised and replaced with loud yelling, and their creativity has been obliterated with a cancer of buzzwords.

Hmm, this could be a wonderful time-saver. Think of all the hours I waste signing up for gay porn myself – I could farm the tedious preliminaries out to a community of arseholes with a few simple tweets and double my wanking time!

    “cuck”

You know, I wonder if there really is a correlation between female adultery and the tendency of their partners to be bullying assholes, and if that correlation runs in the opposite direction they’d expect.

From the department of unintended consequences: that reminds me of a delightful weekend spent at Cuckmere Haven (on the South Coast of England, at the end of the Seven Sisters).

At least I assume that wasn’t their purpose in coining the word???

I’d happily forward it to you, but I’m pretty adept after all these years in formulating email filters that automatically trash most of it for me, now.

Ooh, don’t forget racist. Apparently there’s also a racial dimension.

It seems kind of weird to me for terms from a rather esoteric pornographic fetish to be the things which end up part of one subculture’s discourse. I mean, when their use of the term prompts bewilderment and they end up explaining this particular genre of porn, the interest quickly shifts from “what is calling this person a ‘cuck’ saying about them?” to “why are you so immersed in the subculture of porn that you pepper your speech to others with its terminology?”

Seriously, most people don’t dump porn lingo into their everyday conversation (“money shot” is the closest I can think of to a remotely common term).

Funny that for supposedly being a bastion of hetero manliness, their minds immediately gravitate to gay porn in these kind of situations.

Jake Wildstrom, it’s just a modern term for the same racist fear that’s been around forever. Those lesser savages are going to rape/seduce OUR women. Old as time.

For the record I don’t actually spend hours signing up for porn sites. It’s not like pornography is that difficult to access without it these days. In fact, I often wonder whether the only customers for the sign-up porn sites are arseholes looking to play silly pranks on others…

  9. zenlike says

Money shot doesn’t come from porn, but from regular cinema.

Cuck has indeed been added on my list of words which signify you can disregard anything said by the utterer of it.

Also, I wasn’t aware that cuckoldry had a specific niche porn meaning (I still don’t know what that is, nor do I wish to!). I thought it was just a slightly old-fashioned term for adultery.

  11. brucegee1962 says

Yeah, you’ve got to wonder what they were thinking when they came up with that term.

“Finally! We can now demonstrate to the entire world that we are both sexist AND racist, using just four letters! Genius!”

Which crops up in the damndest places, BTW. Off topic, but this was the argument used to ban marijuana (“It makes nice white girls sleep with Mexicans!”), and opium (“It makes nice white girls sleep with Asians!”), and cocaine (“It makes nice white girls sleep with blacks!”).

My auto ignore list: “Cuck”, “SJW”, “millennial”, “build the wall”, “Obummer”, “gun grabber” anything that sounds like it came from WUWT.com in regards to climate change, “Rachael Maddow is worse than Hannity” and… most importantly IMHO… anyone with an anime girl avatar.

I heard that “virtue-signalling” came out of 4chan before it hit the manosphere, which fits in with “[X]fag” from the article quote.

It’s a nice right-wing snapshot: they can’t imagine anyone would care about diversity for its own sake, so we liberals must only publicly care about diversity to signal that we’re the right kind of people.

My former business partner informed me that “kuk” is Swedish slang for “penis”. It was also on the numberplate of his car, which amused him moderately.

Anyone see the story yet about gunman in a theater in Germany shot and killed by German police? Two news agencies reporting:

    http://www.foxnews.com/world/2016/06/23/gunman-reportedly-opens-fire-in-german-movie-theater-several-wounded.html?intcmp=hpbt4

One of these sites includes this line:

Police spokesman Bernd Hochstaedter, said that “there are no indications at present of an Islamist background.

    Guess which one?

@PZ, do you filter by regular expression or simple boolean? Personally, filtering by regex is pretty much the neatest thing since they put the handle on the Popsicle.
Hence, the only spam that I see is that which I let through the filter, as it’s amusing to me.

As for “cuck” , that merely calls to mind the odd notion of cuckold and that, after considering a yard full of chickens making their trademark sounds and closing with the thought of, “what a dumb fuck, utterly incapable of communicating properly”. Shortly thereafter to be utterly dismissed and forgotten. I have better things to consider and get irritated over. Things like, “whoinhell turned up the gravity today?! My back/knees/ankles are killing me!”.
OK, nobody turns up the gravity, it just feels like it on some mornings. Mornings that typically are days that end in the letter “y” in English. ;)

Well I was an asshole, but as a bona fide actual cuck, I find this strain of alt-right dick-whistling laughable. Like: my ex-wife slept with men while we were together. So now what? Didn’t change my assholery or her relationship-sabotage. The result was we both realised we weren’t a good couple. Move on, move on… The only moral takeaway was that of course lying is bad and assholery is bad and the best is to enjoy life without hurting people. Ah, so the cuck-flingers enjoy life trying to hurt people? Sorry but that’s in the past for me, unless your alt-right screaming ass is currently in my bed or our home, I am nonplussed.

So, it’s a word that signals a particular value; like a sort of, I don’t know, value signal?

I know you posed that tongue-in-cheek, but there is actually some reason behind the use of the term based on cuckoldry. The word is valued not only because of it’s intended emasculation of the person it’s targeted at, but also because of the racism implicit in the term. It’s intended to label the individual as weak, and also as a so-called race traitor.

This is one of the few places where malice is a better explanation than ignorance…

  23. Nomad says

This is a curious coincidence. To try to cut a long story short, there’s a kind of instant messenger based chat group for a group of people I belong to in the local area. We’re not exclusively LGBT, but a lot of us are.

Post Orlando shooting, things got a little strained after someone started posting anti-Muslim videos. Apparently the person that did that was a gun nut who was offended that someone could blame poor innocent guns when clearly, in his eyes, the real culprit were brown people. At the time I didn’t know if he was gay or not.

Well it’s continued, with a few individuals still trying to stir up trouble in the group. They’ve been trying to argue why you can’t blame guns and why any kind of gun regulation is also bad. I haven’t seen most of the arguments, but just to give you an idea of their caliber, I did see one person trying to establish himself as an authority on the subject because he once read a paper published by someone who had a PHD in a related field like criminal science.

Well when the arguments failed the person or persons resorted to insults and posting offensive crap. The first insult I saw was “cuck”. What a surprise, right? First off I think that answers my question about his sexuality. But I was a little surprised at his willingness to demonstrate the connection between gun culture and toxic masculinity.

It was almost cute, other people were confused by the term. You don’t really run into a lot of MRAs in our circle. The truth is, I bet more would have understood “cuckold”, there is a kink about that and we’re a fairly kinky group. But the shortened form was almost meaningless to others who responded in confusion. One assumed it must been intended to be “cock”.

What really made my night, though, was when I saw someone else define the term as one used by “beta males”. Not only did he understand the full baggage attached to that term, but he used some of it as an insult directed back at the gun nuts. It still probably confused others, some of them use terms like alpha and beta and what-not in dominance play and might not get the MRA context.

Oh yeah, and about the other offensive stuff they were posting? I never saw it, we had a mod who was deleting them, but apparently he was posting anti-Semitic pictures. I don’t know any more details then that, except that they might have been gory as well. And he defended himself by arguing that it wasn’t racist because Jewish people aren’t a race.

He did not post gay porn. Probably because, until we established a separate NSFW group, people were unironically posting gay porn already.

  24. antigone10 says

The MRA insults lack meaning unless you are already a member of that in-group.

SJW makes you sound kind of badass
White Knight makes you sound like the hero of a story.
Value signalling? Why yes, I do have values that I like to demonstrate in my words and actions. Thank you for noticing.
“Cuck” makes about as much sense as insulting someone for getting the flu- they didn’t do anything wrong, it just sucks.
Gay is an identifier , not an insult. And not a bad thing, just generally misidentified.

Fag is a vile insult But it also shows that you have the maturity of a not very empathetic or bright 12 year old.

If they are going to do in-group signalling couldn’t they at least pick insults that would hit their political rivals. “Stupid” is a pretty good cross-cultural insult. Or “hypocrite” or “insincere”. If you want someone to indicate that they talk the talk but don’t walk the walk (which is what I think value signaling is misappropriating here) you could come up with a stupid acronym insult like tttwww. Then it could still have in-group value but still demonstrate your distaste for someone outside when they figure it out.

It is an old fashioned term for adultery, and that pretty much sums up the fetish as well, (with people being turned on from all three sides). It’s not exactly that far out there, it’s just getting turned on by someone cheating.

Although, IME, it’s more likely for the fetish to be called netorare or NTR.
