UMM is hiring a biologist

You can read all the details, but the short version is that we’re looking to fill a full-time two-year position for someone to teach microbiology and molecular biology to undergraduates. You might not be enthused about a temporary position like this, but UMM is very highly regarded as a teaching institution, and if you’re looking to improve your prospects for biology teaching at the college level, our name will look really good on your CV…and we’re also committed to helping our hires improve their teaching skills.

    Awesome!

I am totally going to apply.

    Or I would.

If I could navigate snow with my crutches, but I can’t.

Oh, and if I wasn’t committed to a bit more time here to finish up my degree.

And if I was a biologist.

…I guess I’m not applying. :sigh:

  2. Marc Abian says

Wait, there are teaching posts for PhDs that don’t involve them doing any research?

  3. Becca Stareyes says

Marc: Sure are! A lot of junior colleges need a few professors on hand to teach the basics to students who transfer from a junior college to a 4-year college or university. (A lot of that work is via adjuncts, but not all.) And four-year colleges usually hire temporary staff like UMM if there’s a shortage* or they get a sudden increase in teaching load. (Setting up a faculty position takes a lot more administrative overhead than hiring a lecturer for a year or two, and lecturers often have heavier teaching loads than professors because we aren’t expected to do any of the other things professors do.)

I’m a lecturer right now, and while I still do research over the summer or breaks, I’m not paid for it. Also, I have a yearly contract, so a two-year gig sounds pretty nice.

    * For instance, if a lot of professors are going on sabbatical, or paternity/maternity leave.

Ah, the old visiting assistant professorship. Having done a couple of them myself, I do not envy those in that position.

  5. says

Yeah, this is to cover two faculty going on sabbatical, and another who is retiring. We’ll be down 3 faculty, but we get 1 replacement. Yay.
