Bad dad

Oh, it’s Father’s Day? I’m sorry, my father is dead, and I’m going to spend most of the day traveling, so my own kids aren’t going to be able to contact me. Clearly, I am a terrible father.

Don’t tell anyone.

No, today is the summer solstice. We must make sacrifices to ensure the next harvest.

  2. Al Dente says

    Do we need a virgin?

I’ve got a virgin gerbil. But you can’t have him for sacrificing.

  3. says

I must be (or was?) an OK dad. One daughter gave me an Amazon gift certificate, and the other will be over around dinner time with a cheesecake.

  4. slithey tove (twas brillig (stevem)) says

    yeah, hail the sun!!!
one should be at Stonehenge at dawn to praise the Sun for its longest day above the horizon. That’s why today is FATHER’s day, the day of All Father Sun!!!

Aren’t you a little late with this?

  6. MG Myers says

Paul – That’s definitely a good sign if the kids remembered you for Father’s Day.

PZ – Your Father’s Day has been rescheduled to July. :)

Since that has Nicolas Cage and an indication of sacrifice, I aten’t clickin’
That’s one of those movies that should never have been made.

  8. Beatrice, an amateur cynic looking for a happy thought says

I haven’t seen that movie, but I’ve seen it referenced before.
    Is the original better?

  9. Beatrice, an amateur cynic looking for a happy thought says

    Wiki says:

The film garnered five Golden Raspberry Award nominations, for Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Cage), Worst Screenplay, Worst Remake, and Worst On-Screen Couple (Cage and his bearsuit).

    (emphasis mine)

  10. chigau (違う) says

The original Wicker Man is a bit dated now but that’s about the worst thing I can say.
    It has Christopher Lee!

  11. azpaul3 says

Summer Solstice, my butt! You guy on the underside of the world musta hit you heads falling off the planet.

It’s the Winter Solstice, dunderheads. It’s the shortest day of the year, it’s cold, it’s raining and it’s miserable!

    Stick that in your stonehenge!

    Happy winter Father’s Day.

  12. Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls says

    Happy winter Father’s Day.

Except the TrophyWife#10 rescheduled Father’s day to July. Argue with her if you wish. I don’t.
Happy Northern Hemisphere Summer solstice PZ. May you arrive back home in daylight.

Trade ya. It’s the longest day of the year here, it’s too damn hot, and both make me miserable. Ship all unwanted cold weather to SC, please. If I could have the cold and the extra dark, I’d even take the rain.

I got a pair of shorts and a “Trophy Husband” T-shirt.

I always thought Darth Vader was a good dad, and a great villain to the end. He didn’t turn away from the Dark Side, he just finally saw that Luke was a son for Vader to be proud of, and he stopped the Emperor from hurting his child. Pure selfishness, none of that good side crap. (I speak of the original series, not the whining prequels).

    @20 roachiesmom
Too hot? Hasn’t hit 40c yet if you mean South Carolina. Come and complain about too hot after a week above 40. Dropping all the way down to 30 overnights.
And clearly you didn’t learn your science; we can’t send you cold. Cold is the absence of heat. Heat that you selfish poopyheads are keeping to yourselves.
… And get off my lawn.

  16. rietpluim says

Yesterday I got a nice bottle of single malt Scotch. I guess I’m a good dad.

  17. Nepos says

Beatrice @13, the original Wicker Man was Christopher Lee’s favorite of all the movie’s he was in, and he moved heaven and earth to get it released (with questionable success, sadly.) It was long believed that only a butchered copy remained, but recently a version that is almost full length resurfaced.

It is not exactly a horror movie, it’s more of a meditation on faith and it’s implications, especially when two different faith systems interact. It is as subtle and thoughtful as the remake was over-the-top and ridiculous. I highly recommend it.

(As chigau notes, the styles are rather dated. I find Christopher Lee’s hair especially distracting, since whenever he is on screen I am worried it is going to try to run away. But it’s worth looking past that.)

  18. roachiesmom says

llyris, ha. No. When it gets above 10c, it’s already too hot here for me. Always has been. So I actually start complaining about the heat in January, if not just year-round, and just ramp that up exponentially as the temperature increase. I’m sure you can imagine what a nightmare SC has been for me all these decades. Especially the 8 all-too-recent years I spent having to hike miles everywhere I needed to go. Even in summer. In those 40+c temps. At freaking noon, even.

Not a fan. I promise, my selfishness is not keeping the heat here. Take it. Take it ALL.

  19. Colin J says

I used to love staying up late to watch cheesy old horror & sci fi movies on TV. I saw The Wicker Man when I was fairly young and that one has really stuck with me – it gave me the serious creeps.

Apparently they rushed through the filming of The Wicker Man because the studio was about to be sold and there was no way the new owners were going to make this film. The story is set at the end of spring but it was filmed in winter. It was bloody cold – much colder than it was supposed to be in the film – so for a lot of the outdoor scenes the actors had to suck on ice cubes to stop their breath fogging.

I showed this film to my wife once. She’s no fan of old movies, atmospheric films don’t impress her and she can’t stand Edward Woodward. It did not go down well.

If only I could find a DVD copy of The Keep. Might have to watch that one on my own, though…

  20. chigau (違う) says

    Colin J
If your wife doesn’t like Edward Woodward, she should have appreciated the ending.

  21. Nepos says

    Colin J
Did you point out that Edward Woodward being a self-righteous asshole was key to the plot? (Though in his defense, his character had good reason to believe a child had been murdered–and the scene at the beginning with his fiance in the church puts him in a very different light).

I knew most of the behind the scenes story, but I hadn’t heard about the weather. Certain scenes must have been quite uncomfortable.

  22. Colin J says

It’s not that she disliked the main character in this film – she can’t stand Edward Woodward in anything. She has much the same reaction to Michael Caine and Bryan Brown. Guess there’s a certain style they have in common.
