AtheistTV, next week

I hope AtheistTV is good — they’ve announced they’ll be putting 50 years worth of their video archives on there, so I’m hoping for some interesting content. On the other hand, if it’s recycling crap from youtube as a fast way to get lots of noise online, well…it could get embarrassing. There has to be some quality control, somewhere.

I’ll check it out next Tuesday and let you know what’s on.

Not a big fan of the music in the second half. Sounds like a trailer for a summer action movie, where square-jawed hero saves the world from whatever. The opening bit was a bit more restrained.

I’m curious about what the content will really be like. I don’t feel like I’ve got a clear image of what they’re going for. This could either be really good or really boring. I guess we’ll see.

I’m afraid they’re planning to lift whole channels out of youtube, and it’ll be lots of talking heads sitting on their bed staring into a webcam and babbling LOUDLY with poor lighting and lazy logic. There must be some quality control, some standards for what is worth presenting, or it’ll be a place where you’re looking for diamonds by raking your fingers through giant piles of shit.

to present the first on-demand television station that presents exclusively atheist, humanist, and freethought programming.

    Bolding mine.

Cue dictionary atheist outrage in 3… 2… what’s that? Dictionary atheists mainly get upset when atheism is extended to feminism, but not humanism and freethought? How oddly irrational of them. Huh.

    @PZ
Kinda what I’m worried about. Streaming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; they’re going to need a lot of material. There’s going to be pressure to produce content and that might give an incentive to cut corners on the quality. I hope not.

Oh god, what if this turns into the Discovery Channel of atheism.

    It’s sounding more History Channel.

Let’s hope they don’t take ques from the History or Discovery Channel. There are too many reality shows as is.

It will be interesting to see how their programming plays out. Hopefully it is a good balance of topics and not a bunch of reality shows.

    Welcome to nearly all TV.

Probably this channel is not that important to readers of this blog; we’ve already seen the better stuff. It might be helpful to some of the new ones coming up, provided AtheistTV doesn’t start putting up MRAtheist material.

Looks like it’ll be on Roku, so there’s that.

There’s enough quality material out there by Dawkins and Hitchens to fill up a sizeable portion of primetime programming. Other content geared specifically toward TV like The Atheist Experience reruns are pretty good bets.

You can’t avoid Sturgeon’s Law with 24/7 programming. All we can hope for is that the experimental content starts out in a less visible time slot.

They might also use AtheistTV as a fund raising tool. Basically, give them more money, and they’ll produce more “quality” shows.

I wrote about a possible Fall lineup on my humor site. No reply from them yet. ;) Though I imagine any new programing will probably be talk shows and maybe a documentary or two.
