When I saw that Jamie was going to perform at the Reason Rally and didn’t know who he was, I downloaded a live show and thought it needed a couple of coats of polish before it was good enough for me to pay for. And then actually AT the Reason Rally, he was awesome. A unique voice, and some seriously informed bravado.

Which leads me to think that now that he’s gotten his finger on the issues, he’ll kick their asses.

I’ve seen Jamie perform here in Sydney a couple of times, and very much enjoyed his deeply layered comedy. I wish him well, and I’m glad he’s written this on such a high-traffic site so that other men can hear his message.

On a tangential note, for once (at least so far) it’s not a horrorshow in comments on a confessional piece at Jezebel. I think back to the avalanche of finger-wagging that usually ensues, but then the confessional pieces are normally written by women. Either the finger-waggers are stepping back voluntarity or Jez’s moderators are being way more effective than usual.

Wonder how long it’ll be before, “He’s doin’ it for the blog hits,” and, “Why didn’t you get help sooner if you’re a REAL ____”. Sigh.

Good old hippie stuff. Guess you have to be an old hippie to appreciate it.
    Be well, everyone.

You will stop when you’re full. You will see your old self in the shadow of the drunk guy puking his guts out. You will walk away. You are a goddamn superhero. You will help others. You will never be sick again. You will stop hating yourself, and you will be proud.

Holy Living Fuck. I just… fuck.

    I read it again.

Its the routine that gets you. We love habit. Especially when it tastes nice.

I have never been slapped so hard by words on the internet.

    Fuck.

    Carlie, much appreciated.

The cursor icon is blinking at me and theres so much but so little and its harder than I thought it would be to type the word “problem” without punctuation.

But thats OK. Nothing is completely fucked. I am not fucked. I just need tommorrow to be the thing I promised to myself yesterday, and Jamie made today different.

    I am fucking on it.

OT: Josh, yes, once we established you wanted the info, I sent 2 more e-mails with that info. Did you get these? Should I resend?

We’re all weirdos and in this together?

Well I guess if you put it that way, I have no problem referring to myself as a weirdo as well.

If you have time to listen to a podcast, I highly recommend theirs.

“We all have addictions. We all have obsessions. We all have things that get in the way of us living our lives. But the point of life is to fix these things. To be great. To improve every day. “

Fascinating, how somebody like that can arrive at such a beautiful and crisp thought.

One must wonder why such thinking eludes most ‘straight’ people.

Somebody like “that”? Pray tell what is “that”?

What? What does addiction have to do with being straight or not? Or do you mean straight as in “strait and narrow?”

You may slip up. We all slip up, but once you admit you have a problem, you have a new agenda: to get healthy. To be better. You will find other loves… You are a goddamn superhero. You will help others. You will never be sick again. You will stop hating yourself, and you will be proud.

Now that is some inspiring shit; and relevant to so much more than the subject at hand. Well done, Jamie. Well fucking done.

    @anchor #23

Your post brought up all sorts of red flags for me :-/ I assume it’s just the phrasing, so care to elaborate?

Speaking about people in the 3rd person is discouraged. It is one of new guidelines and I think a potentially really helpful one.

I know where he’s coming from, with addiction and food issues, which are just another kind of addiction. It’s hard, especially when you’ve trained your body to purge easily – I can vomit at will, which is not a skill anyone should be proud of.

  20. F [is for failure to emerge] says

    Wow.

B-Lar, what ever you’re up to, more power to you.

carlie, Thumper: It sort of rubbed me the wrong way too, but I was taking it as “straight” as in “not doing x“, where the variable is something like drugs, and various other things to greater or lesser extents of usage. Like straight people = teetotalers frequently don’t seem to understand addictions. Also maybe straight meaning mentally OK, e.g., not negatively inebriated, calmed down or not in shock after a traumatic experience, recovered from a fit of anger, etc. (Are you straight?)

There are so many bad options for what could have been the meaning, I can’t even begin to work them out. I just sort of defaulted to my operating definitions, yet something about it still felt odd.

Jamie’s article brought out such contradictory feelings in me. Yes, I’m glad he’s taken the courageous stand of writing about his issues with food, and hope that it helps other people with disordered eating. But it’s still a too-common belief (which shows up in some of the comments to the piece): As long as you’re “just” eating too little, or eating too much but puking it up afterward, or eating too much but only once in a while, it’s cool. You’re thin, so you’re still worth society’s attention. There are programs out there, there’s growing recognition of the very real psychological issues people face, there’s sympathy.

But if you’re a fatty fat fatso, well, that’s just a character flaw. You’re weak. Just eat less, exercise more. It’s not hard to lose weight, you just don’t want to. You’re lazy. Eat fewer carbs. Eat less fat. Stop letting yourself go. Control your portions. Never, ever is there any consideration of the idea that hey, repeated and continuous overeating is a FUCKING EATING DISORDER!

Sorry. I’m in the last phase of the process leading up to having my guts rearranged like a macrame planter, because after 40 years of being overweight and trying everything under the sun to help that, including psychotherapy, there doesn’t seem to be anything else out there that can reliably help me or people like me. I wish that there was something in between major surgery and affirmations (like “You will stop when you’re full.”). And I’m still smarting from the outing with my family a month ago, where two people openly stared and laughed at me and my husband through our whole meal at a local restaurant. Those of us who are overweight are mocked, laughed at, dismissed, bullied, discriminated against and hurt over and over and over on a daily basis…which just makes many of us eat more. And it seems that the only thing out there that consistently helps us out of this horrible spiral is having a surgeon play cat’s cradle with our digestive tract.

I’m frustrated, sad, and ragey, yes. Sorry, again.
