I just donated to The Ada Initiative

Since my daughter works in and is a student of computer science, I figured I’d better do what I can to make that field a better environment for women.

You can also donate now. It’s a good cause!

P.S. Matching funds! Your donation is worth twice as much if you give now!

I just got a comment on twitter about this post:

@Miserere22: @pzmyers hopefully she gets raped. no offense.

Hopefully their account gets reported by people all over the world. No offense.

That kind of asshole is what we oppose — you might also donate to the Ada Initiative to spite him and all of his fellow misogynists.

The other day I mentioned in Richard Carrier’s blog about someone complaining of “prudery” and “anti-sex behavior” in geek culture. I didn’t say it at the time, but that guy was actually complaining about a gaming convention using The Ada Inititive’s anti-harrassment policies as their guidelines!

Jesus Weeping Christ. I’m short of money at the moment, however, I will kick in what I can now, and more next week.

There is no obligation to donate. This is an opportunity for those of us who are more privileged to support those who are less so.

  4. says

I really cannot wrap my mind around what that waste of space going under nym Miserere22 did. Its just… Its…

    It makes me despair.

I feel obligated, as a decent human being. Also, I’m a hell of a lot more privileged than many, so it won’t hurt. As a matter of fact, we just canceled our sat TV, so there’s more money than I thought. Forgot about that.

I had to come out from lurking – thanks to @Miserere22 Ada got a donation from me.

  7. Kevin Schelley says

I wish I could afford to. I’d love to make that twitter asshat eat his words.

  8. jedibear says

*Love* the suggested donation amounts. I’d toss some money at them just for that if I had it.

unfortunately they’ve made their tweets private so can’t link to the offensive tweet to report them.

BTW, what’s Sk@tje doing in Serbia??

… My mind is boggled by someone who can issue a threat to someone’s loved ones then follow it by ‘no offense’. Generally if I wish someone ill, I mean for them to be upset by this.

Unless they think that ‘no offense’ is some kind of magic word that automatically blocks the bad consequences of being an asshole: ‘I want you to be upset, but be unable to act on it’. Which is a special kind of ignorance.

Yeah, fuck those American women, ’cause this isn’t about women, it’s about business! :eyeroll: Guess you can’t manage to do two things at once, eh?

  14. René says

@Fleur du mal. Try replacing ‘business’ with ‘priviledge’ in my post.

I do my best. I am willing to understand your hostility.

  15. watry says

“I don’t like you, so I hope something terrible happens to your loved ones.” Ew. Ew ew ew. Would that humanity as a whole were better than this.

A charity named in honor of Ada Lovelace? Dedicated to helping women (and trans* and genderqueer) in computer science. Fantastic! I’m in!

And in case anyone was wondering why such things are necessary, Miserere22 provides a perfect (if horrifying) example.

  17. says

I had some cash back coming on a credit card, so it was painless. Hmm, maybe I should also mention them on Facebook. Most of may friends are pretty broke, but couldn’t hurt.

  18. says

I clicked to report that person.
It’s Twitter, so fat lot of good it will do.

Yeah, I know… by reporting rape threats (even rape “hopes”) I’m a horrible anti-speech fascist.

  19. timberwoof says

Misere22, you are a sorry waste of air and aren’t worth the fur you’re printed on. You’re lucky you don’t live on one of those space stations where people like you get chopped up and fed to the hydroponic gardens. Offense intended.

  20. says

Sadly, Google has not crawled Miserere22’s Twitter feed in about a month. If it had, we could compare his urging Michael Shermer to sue over allegations of rape to his reaction to this post. Then we could hang it on the wall next to the convicted sex offender trying to get Rebecca Watson fired from SGU.

“Unless they think that ‘no offense’ is some kind of magic word that automatically blocks the bad consequences of being an asshole: ‘I want you to be upset, but be unable to act on it’. Which is a special kind of ignorance.”

In my experience this is exactly what no offense means. If they really didn’t want to offend, they wouldn’t say something offensive in the first place.

  22. says

@Miserere22: @pzmyers hopefully she gets raped. no offense.

“No offense”. You keep using that word. It does not mean what you think it means.

I can’t fathom why anyone would think that 1. saying “no offense” magically erases offensiveness and 2. it was ever acceptable to wish rape on someone. And so I contribute an appropriate 2^n .

  23. screechymonkey says

him and all of his fellow misogynists

Oh, there you go again, PZ, calling someone a misogynist just for disagreeing with you… uh … about whether or not someone deserves to be raped.

    Never mind. Carry on!

  24. greg hilliard says

PZ: I just donated $50. It would have been more, but Gannett laid me off Aug. 1 — less than three weeks after my wife was laid off. Oh, and Miserere22? Thanks for the incentive!

  25. congenital cynic says

I just can’t imagine how fucked up someone has to be to send a tweet like that. How does someone hate women so much? I don’t get it. I’m a man and I think far too large a percentage of males are thoughtless assholes. But I don’t go around wishing harm to them. I have two daughters and any male who wished them to be raped for something I said or did to support women would have declared himself to be the dregs of humanity. I hope you can identify and report him.

And people wonder why I’m cynical, and despair over the state and fate of humanity.

  26. says

How does someone hate women so much?

To this person, women aren’t people to be hated (think “Atheists aren’t angry at God;they don’t believe he exists”). They are property to be damaged. He (taking a wild guess here) is angry at PZ and wants PZ’s property (i.e. his daughter) broken.

    Regarding Miserere22

Hopefully their account gets reported by people all over the world

Miseryguts will continue tweeting without pause. The Twitter operators may pretend to be shocked when one of their customers hits the headlines in a big way, but otherwise it’s open slather for everyone.

  28. mykroft says

Found some of his cached tweets. Didn’t have the quote in question, but he sounds like a real winner.

The guy lives in Chile, where the machismo culture is alive and well. No surprises here. If anything, he might be puzzled about the reaction to his tweet. Compassion for women as people does not compute for those who were raised to believe women were automatically inferior to men.

  29. mykroft says

Hmm. Just tried loading the tweet page in a different browser (I use Chrome mostly), and didn’t see the Google translate button. Hopefully you can translate the page if you view it.

  30. mykroft says

Note to self. Don’t bash an entire country based on one idiot….

For anyone who lives in Chile reading this, I apologize. We have more than our share of idiots in the US of A, so I understand that it’s not fair to generalize (and malign) based on a sample of one.

  31. anuran says

If I had enough money to afford to buy food and pay for the phone this week I would donate. Sadly, neither is the case.

  32. eigenperson says

    Well, there’s this gem:

Los hombres realizan los trabajos mas pesados y mas riesgosos, trabajan mas horas, etc, y mujeres preguntan por que ellas ganan menos.

“Men do the hardest and most rigorous jobs, work longer hours, etc., and women ask why they earn less.”

There’s also some (undoubtedly bullshit) conspiracy theory that says Michele Bachelet isn’t really a doctor.

  33. Thumper; immorally inferior Atheist mate says

    *rage*

What kind of arsehole says they “hope” someone’s daughter gets raped?

The sheer proliferation of arseholes this week has meant I’ve been in a pretty much constant bad mood.

How long are you able to donate? I get paid next week; should be able to kick something their way then.

  34. muskiet says

I just called @Miserere22 a “Misogynistic Fucktard” through Twitter.
It’s okay though, I told him not to be offended.

Gosh, how helpful! Well, maybe not as helpful as reporting him, or as helpful as donating and informing Miserere he made you decide to donate, and I note your use of ‘tard’, because what’s life without a little splash damage?

  36. onion girl, OM; social workers do it with paperwork says

Fuck. That. Asshole. And go Skatje, for continuing to be awesome.

I’ll donate as soon as I get employed again.

  37. onion girl, OM; social workers do it with paperwork says

*waves* Yeah, hi, folks. :) Sorry, I’ve been kinda incommunicado since losing my job–depressing, disheartening, all that jazz.

(The continued miserable (pun intended) behavior on the part of sexists in general (atheists/skeptics in particular) is unfortunately very conducive to lurking.)

*hugs* and cheers for those still passionately fighting; I’ll join in when spoons permit! :)
