When he’s on, he’s on

I confess — I sometimes find Stephen Colbert’s schtick wearing. But other times…whoa, this is beautiful. He got stood up by a musical guest, Daft Punk, so he complains about it bitterly and hilariously.

Ooops, stuffed it below the fold because the stupid videos are on autoplay. Why do people configure their videos that way? Are they just incompetent?

But then, he bounces back joyously. Hey, he’s a good dancer!

No autoplay in my browser either: I have IE 10. No autoplay on Firefox 22.0, either. It might be a browser version issue, not a configuration one.

In any case, yes: even more brilliant than usual.

Had the autoplay issue with embedded Daily Show clips at Friendly Atheist, where I discovered the FlashControl extension for Chrome. Boom, no more autoplay videos anywhere. Flash content comes up as a grey box with the flash logo in the center, if I want to load and run the flash, I just click it. And I can whitelist sites like YouTube where everything is Flash. The best part? I no longer use AdBlock Plus, since I mainly used it to stop video ads autoplaying. Now I’m not hurting the meager revenue streams of my favorite sites as much.

    Geo-blocked!! For shame!!
At least the geo-block message is funny.

“Sorry but this video is unavailable from your location.
It is one of the detriments if living under a monarchy.
But in case you can’t give up your Vegemite and move to America you can watch clips from the Colbert Report at thecomedychannel.com.au”

And what do you know. There it is.

Hours of paperwork and planning must have gone into that second segment.

That. Was. Amazing. Do not fuck with Colbert.

If it really went down like he described, I can’t imagine the pile of exhausted crew and interns putting all of that together in 24 hours or so that was left in its wake.

Francisco – if I’m not mistaken, most of the shows were owned by the same company, so they may have been able to get one blanket set of permissions and do a quick callout to all of the shows taping that day to see who was game for a few minutes of filming. I don’t know how the Colbert people managed to fit it all in along with producing the rest of their own show, though.

Thankyou ProxMate. That was amazing and us Aussies should never have to miss out on stuff like that :P

Anyone manage to get a list of all the random guests?

    @Carlie,
I happened to catch a few minutes of Jimmy Fallon’s late night show last week, and within that few minutes, Stephen Colbert came out of the wings and danced with him. It just seemed like silly randomness at the time but obviously was part of a larger ‘crossover’ scheme. At any rate, it wasn’t all taped on the same day as Colbert’s ‘Daft Punk’d’ show aired (this past Tuesday night). Still made me giggle, tho :)

jenniferphillips – I like Jimmy Fallon so much, from what I’ve seen. He seems to have a very kind sense of humor compared to most other comedians, and the attitude of being thrilled with how his life’s turned out rather than cynical about everything.

When Colbert debuted seven years ago (yikes!), I remember predicting it would get old fast. Mainly because how much milage could he milk out of mocking Bill O’Reilly and Fox News?

    Christ, was I wrong.

I’m sure one day I’ll get sick of Colbert, but it won’t be any time soon. Hell, just the fact that I still know conservatives who love the show but don’t get the joke is worth it.

But then he has Robin Thicke on, singing that rapey song.

    Is that good?

    I’m not sure that’s good.

    For Canada:

Sorry, but this video is unavailable from your location, probably due to your overly polite attitudes.

What, “Get You Alone”? That’s an old song. Or does he have several?

As an Australian using Chrome, I recommend the extension Media Hint, available for free from the web store.
