Is anyone else losing their mind?

brainsmidicon

I just got home, and now we’re all busily preparing at la Maison Pharyngula for Convergence/SkepchickCON. Somehow I have to watch Prometheus in preparation for our evening of scathing commentary, collect pictures of penises, and get party room decorations together. Fortunately, Mary is doing much of the dirty work of getting stuff organized.

Y’all are coming out, right? We wouldn’t want all this work to go to waste. Also, we all need to lose our minds together. It’s more fun that way.

Also, do I need to remind you? The Freethoughtblogs Brains party room will be in 228 in the Doubletree, right next to the Skepchick party room. 8pm-1am Thurs/Fri/Sat night. All the cool people will be there.

But, but, I won’t be there… does that mean I’m not cool? (sob) I has a sad now. :-(

    Dick the Damned@3,

What’s the connection between penises & brains?

What part of their anatomy do some men use to think with for $100 Alex?

  3. John Morales says

    I’ll be reading about it.

Ray @4, I won’t be there either, but who wants to be cool when one can be hot? ;)

  4. Ray, rude-ass yankee says

    John Morales@7,

Yeah, HOT! That’s it, that’s the ticket!

Still, sounds like CONvergence will be fun.

    Rob Grigjanis@8,

    That’s a logical phallacy.

Good thing I wasn’t drinking milk or I’d have snorted it through my nose and ruined my keyboard.

I’m taking a break from hemming the skirt for my costume. I can’t finish the costume for my cousin until she gets here tomorrow, but otherwise, I’m almost set.

The kids are upset I won’t let them add their renfaire weaponry to their costumes. Maybe I’ll make them some cardboard daggers or something.

But the real issue, the one that has me scratching my head, is what to put in the hip flask this year? Not sure if I’ll have enough time to pick up more of the good whiskey. Should I go for one of the flavored rums? Decisions decisions.

    Child Abuse! Call the authorities!

Sometimes I feel that way. The vicious and brutal horde, though, have helped to pull me back. Many times.

In a stunning triumph of mind/body duality I shall be sending* my brain there sans the rest of me. The damn thing isn’t doing me any good right at the moment so I might as well give it a vacation.

    *Via the aether of course.

I still have my mind. But I no longer have the charger for it, so it’s virtually useless.

I would love, love, love to be able to attend something like this someday. Did I mention how lovely a city Portland is to visit? Godless, filled with plenty of human rights activists, but still enough misogyny and woo floating around that this place could use a good shaking of the tree.

Speaking of misogyny, we have a lovely high profile case of that in our news.

Our mayor’s public safety policy director pointed out an elected county commissioner in the audience with the phrase, “Here’s our beautiful commissioner, Loretta Smith—mmm, mmm, mmm—she looks good tonight.” Of course, he followed up with a suggestive hip movement. This took place at a meeting to introduce the new director of the city Office of Equity and Human Rights, no less.

Was this appalling display of disrespect dealt with by the mayor? Why yes, it was! More than three weeks after the event, the mayor announced that the man would be suspended for a whole week! 5 days of sleeping in. Unpaid! Conveniently during the warnest, dryest weather we’ll probably have in Portland all year! Oh, and he’ll have to take “specific, one-on-one anti-harassment training”, although there is no mention of this taking place during his suspension. By the way, the commissioner mentioned that he had also spoken inappropriately to her during to other encounters.

Good to know our mayor’s public policy advisor has such a wonderful predisposition towards half or the city’s population, eh? But at least he will get some training on not showing it publicly. We should all feel great about keeping him in his office because our mayor said he rejected his offer to resign because “I believed, and I continue to believe, that Baruti is the right person for the task at hand.”

I guess our newly elected male mayor must not be that uncomfortable with the fact that his newly appointed public safety advisor publicly harasses and sexualizes female elected officials.

Damn, now I’m just venting and completely off topic. But it makes me sick when shit like this goes down in my city. I love this city. And I want freethought and AthiesmPlus stuff going down here. I do.

I can’t wait. I still have not seen Prometheus and I cannot decide if I want to watch it quick or have my first viewing of it be at the con. I guess with most MST3K movies, I go in without having viewed the film.

    BRAINS

  13. PDX_Greg says

Ugh, I tried to include a link to the story in my last comment, and it died somehow. I guess my whole post was an off-topic rant, anyway.

So, all you Blomington-attending awesomes have fun. I’ll just stew in Portland and wish I was there.

    LOSING my mind?

I’ve been on CONvergence Concom for 14 years–four as a department head! (Gaming)

My mind isn’t just lost, it was last reported in the vicinity of Zeta Reticuli sometime in 2006….

  15. Akira MacKenzie says

I guess the Yithians got fed up with those woo-woo occult groups they were relying on.

They simply MUST do a RiffTrax MP3 version your take on Prometheus! As much as I love the VODs of lousy cheap/public domain flicks they’ve been offering out lately (“Dr. Who and the Daleks” was a scream!), they need to start riffing blockbusters again.

  16. nonzero says

Prometheus really got under my skin (heh), I can’t wait for a PZ review of this movie.

PZ, you know how you thought it would be a good idea to go to church[es] to see what all the fuss was about, but later regretted it and called off the project?

    Prometheus is like that.

You are going to get very angry, or at least annoyed, and then you are going to regret it.

  18. Johnny Oizys says

Visually stunning at times, plot is messed up and has major holes in it, the audio gets on your nerves?

Could be church, could be Prometheus…

    Bob Dowling @25 is right.

    #3:

What’s the connection between penises & brains?

I always thought we developed a big brain solely to better serve our reproductive organ.

  20. shadowwalkyr says

Actually, I have it on very good authority that “lose” is not the right verb; it implies possession at some point in the past.

Prometheus: I don’t know enough about the motion picture arts and sciences to be sure, but it looked as though there could have been a good movie in there if only…………

Nah. Prometheus just plain blows. Sorry Ridley, they can’t all be gems and jewels.
