Wow, that’s got to sting, South Carolina

So the mouthbreathers in South Carolina elected corrupt, lying, slow-witted Christian Mark Sanford to congress yesterday. John Fugelsang delivers the definitive summary of SCarolina politics.

BURN.

Dammit! That rant and its delivery are both brilliant! I would love to be able to do the same for Texas.

This is our why our politics are fucked. You can always rely on the public having the memory of the gnat, you can rely on Republicans to buy the most paper thin of excuses for the in-group, and you can rely on the fact that a Democrat competing with even the slimiest thug will be too cowardly to point out the long trail of victims and the thick layer of goo. It is trivial to rewrite even the most recent of histories in our current political climate as the result of a credulous public, exploitative politicians, and a media that is various combinations of disingenuous and incompetent.

    …too bitter?

  3. doghouse says

    That was brilliant!
I would have loved a little more snark about his new Argentinean girlfriend like.
Isn’t he bringing a foreigner into our country to take away the job of wives of congressmen!!!
Doesn’t anyone care about his poor American ex-wife?

South Carolina, too small to be a republic, too large to be a insane asylum. – Congressman Pettigru, 1860.

  5. PDX_Greg says

Most entertaining video I have seen in a long time, if I don’t stop to thing about the sad realities he is elucidating. Get this guy a national show!

  6. aluchko says

He deserved to be booted for the illegal actions he took to cover up the affair, but as for the original sin (an affair) I don’t think he deserved to be listed with the racists, sexists, and homophobes listed in the video.

As far as I’m concerned a politician’s personal life is next to irrelevant, I don’t want to see or hear about their spouse, kids, affairs, work out routines, taste in music, or parties. I don’t even know the name of the wife of the Canadian PM and that’s the way I like it.

***I don’t think he deserved to be listed with the racists, sexists, and homophobes***

    Well, he votes with them.

  9. Ragutis says

And MSNBC hasn’t replaced Lawrence O’Donnell with this guy yet, why?

  10. okeydoke says

@7: That’s all well and good but i want to know this stuff if the politician in question runs on fiscal responsibility and family values.

  11. thumper1990 says

Lol! I really enjoyed that :) SC sounds like a terrifyingly backwards place, though.

  12. DonDueed says

Strom Thurmond fought against segregation? Who knew?

    Otherwise, a brilliant rant.

  13. Blueaussi says

To be fair, the Confederate flag no longer flies atop the state house. It has it’s own ~special~, well lit memorial on the state house grounds. Otherwise, he’s pretty spot on. sighIt’s so hard to be from South Carolina.

  14. esmith4102 says

Looks like the old cliche – “South Carolina: too small to be a country; too big to be an insane asylum” is right on the money and, in fact, a truism!

  15. Rev. BigDumbChimp says

Oh it burns, because it’s spot fucking on.

    Trust me.

There’s a reason why people refer to South Carolina politics as the most fucked up in the country.

We just witnessed one of the most politically incestual races in history.

It’s hard to really recount all the insane details of everything that went on down here to people not in the state.

  16. Rev. BigDumbChimp says

Elizabeth Cobert-Busch even tried her hardest to play to the right wing down here, but the D next to her name doomed her.

But there is some small amount of hope because she did get some endorsements from traditionally right wing institutions like the Charleston Post and Courier and did fairly well leading up to the election.

unfortunately, the election is all that matters.

  17. maverick.librarian says

Oh holy FSM. That is perfect. Can we please have a letter campaign to get Mr. Fugelsang to make one for Texas? Texas is just begging for one of these: Rick Perry, Louie Gohmert, Ted Cruz. They have their share of a**hole politicians that make the state “proud” plus low rankings in health care, poverty, so on.

    Best, and keep on blogging.

  18. richcon says

aluchko: If you think it was about having an extramarital affair, you must have missed something. This is the guy who ran on fiscal responsibility, “Christian” family values, and the Republican fear of non-green-card-holding Hispanics, and who voted to impeach the only US president since before World War I to balance the budget four years in a row over a onetime taxpayer-free technically-not-sex blowjob from an American girl (and then make amends with the still-married wife)… only to then divorce his own wife after using taxpayer dollars from the country’s second most-unemployed state to secretly fly to another continent so he could repeatedly fuck his non-Green-card-holding Hispanic mistress.

  19. Khantron, the alien that only loves says

I don’t think he deserved to be listed with the racists, sexists, and homophobes listed in the video.

If he doesn’t deserve to be listed with those people he wouldn’t be a Republican.

  20. Holms says

I’m not quite getting the bit about senator Strom Thurmond (sp?):

“…Who fought against segregation while secretly fathering a child he had with the family’s black maid…”

    Did the dude misspeak?

  21. lpetrich says

I suppose that if Ted Kennedy’s career could survive Chappaquiddick, Mark Sanford’s career can survive this scandal. But the Chappaquiddick scandal did ruin his chances for the Presidency, and Ted Kennedy contented himself with being a Senator for the rest of his life.

  22. JohnnieCanuck says

    @23 Holms

With that fast patter, it’s not too surprising that he would stumble over a word. Yes, Thormond was a segregationist. He ran for PotUS in 1948 as a Dixiecrat and switched to the Republicans because Democrats were becoming too liberal and supportive of civil rights. He filibustered against the 1957 Civil Rights Act and voted against civil rights legislation in 1964 and 1965.

Shortly after his death in 2003, it was revealed that when he was 22, he fathered a daughter, Essie Mae Washington-Williams, with the family maid who was 16 at the time.

All this from Wikipedia, as anyone could guess.
