Friday Cephalopod: Our cunning plan exposed

pinksquid

This pretty pink photo that accompanied the article has nothing at all to do with the contents; this can’t be the species involved. But that’s appropriate to the devious nature of the story.

A squid was caught in China that had swallowed a three pound bomb — a live explosive that was later detonated by the local bomb squad.

Just keep that in mind next time you order calamari. If you hear a loud boom from the kitchen, you’ll know the suicide squid have struck again.

Ok, two obvious questions, the second of which maybe PeeZed (Australian model) can help with:
    – where did it find it?
    – why on earth would it swallow it?

    A) Find it? More likely constructed it in an inky undersea lair.

    B) If it were an octopus, I’d say revenge. But as it was a squid, probably just stupidly messing around. Now, a cuttlefish… first small steps toward world domination. And might be pulling the strings behind those easily manipulated squid…

Some bureaucrat somewhere made a tiny spelling mistake, they were meant to deploy the bomb squad

Another Dr. Evil plot involving squid with frickin’ bombs in their bellies foiled by Austin Powers.

Aren’t squid supposed to be very intelligent? How smart is it to swallow a bomb?

I suspect shenanigans. I thought squid actually had very tiny gullets, much smaller than their beaks, and so they must rip out tiny bits of flesh to swallow them. I do not see how even a largish squid, as this was, could swallow a 3 lb bomb.

Every so often some farmer in northern France gets killed when his plow hits an artillery shell left over from World War One.
