Why I am an atheist – David Woon

A slightly different approach to your exercise…

Why I am not an Atheist

I am not an atheist because I hate Jesus Christ, Allah, Zeus, Gaia, Cthulhu, or any of the other pantheon of postulated deities.

I am not an atheist because I want to live an immoral life.

I am not an atheist because I have never been in a foxhole.

I am not an atheist because I disrespect tradition.

I am not an atheist because I am a social misfit.

I am not an atheist because I’m a nonconformist rebel iconoclast yadda yadda yadda.

I am not an atheist because I want to argue with everyone.

I am not an atheist because it’s cool to be one.

I could go on and on about all the erroneous reasons theists think that atheists exist. If you really want to know why I am atheist, don’t judge me without listening to me, and don’t believe what others tell you about why there are atheists.

Just sayin’…

You are too an iconoclast. You just messed with the regular formatting of the ‘Why I Am’ scheme, you rebel scum!

    Here’s my version:

I am not an atheist because I hate Jesus Christ, Allah, Zeus, Gaia, Cthulhu, or any of the other pantheon of postulated deities. It would be illogical to hate things that don’t exist.

I am not an atheist because I want to live an immoral life; quite the contrary.

I am not an atheist because I have never been in a foxhole, though I never plan to be in one.

I am not an atheist because I disrespect tradition, though I am skeptical of it, instance by instance.

I am not an atheist because I am a social misfit, though sometimes I feel like one because of others’ bigotry towards my atheism.

I am not an atheist because I’m a nonconformist rebel iconoclast, though my behavior does tend in that direction.

I am not an atheist because I want to argue with everyone, although that sounds like fun at times.

I am not an atheist because it’s cool to be one, although it really is.

I am also not an atheist because I am depressed or disillusioned with the world or my species; any such feelings I have are primarily due to the actions of religious people.

I often follow links from atheist blogs and websites to articles, usually the online versions of newspapers, about various aspects of religion. Atheist blogs do get the odd contrarian but the comment threads below these articles are in neutral territory so the godly tend to outnumber the godless.

This is why reading this post really struck a chord. Commenting on these threads is like playing a game of whackamole as the same logical fallacies and misconceptions about atheists just keep coming up over and over again. Just how many times will we have to refute bloody Pascal’s wager before it finally lays down and dies?

Technically, I’m not an atheist for any of those reasons, either. Yet, most of those descriptions do apply to me. :)
